Losing her Dad and Mormonism: Inside The Bachelor star Litia’s ‘conservative’ family life
She sadly lost her father at a young age
Litia from The Bachelor is winning Grant Ellis’ heart, and the time finally came for him to meet her family. She feared their reactions because Grant would be the first man who doesn’t follow the Mormon religion that Litia would be bringing home, which led to a load of interest from viewers about her life back at home.
Litia lost her dad at a very young age
Litia sadly lost her dad when she was only three months old. He was in a car accident. Litia said on The Bachelor: “Even though he’s gone, I still feel his love,” adding how she wants to have a big family of her own. Some people thought she was adopted as they thought she didn’t look like her parents on the Hometowns episode, but her mother is her biological parent.
Her parents met while they were both in college at Hawaii. “My mom is from Idaho. She’s white and my dad is from Fiji. They fell in love and they got married and they had me,” Litia explained to Grant in episode three. Her mother was only 23 when Litia’s father died. Litia said: “My mom is my greatest example of strength and resilience because I can’t imagine losing my husband and having a little baby at that time.”
“My grandparents and my mom’s siblings, like my aunts and uncles, made me feel so loved and so special,” Litia said. “I just feel, like, really lucky to have my support system.” We got to meet her Grandpa on the show, and my god is he the sweetest grandparent the show has quite literally ever had!
Her mother remarried years later
Litia’s mother is thought to have become a Mormon wife and remarried a man who follows the religion. Maurie Garr, Litia’s mom, FaceTimed the pair, with Grant telling her, “She was saying how much she missed you, and I figured we’d give you a call just to say hi,” who said she was “so glad” they called her together.
“I’m really grateful that I got to talk to my mom tonight. I’m so glad that she got to meet Grant and that Grant got to see a little bit of what I was talking about in our conversation,” Litia said in a confessional. “It meant a lot to me.” Litia’s mom is also a parent to her two brothers, Ethan and Jackson Garr.
She was raised under a Mormon religion
In the past, Litia has typically only dated people who were also members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — “but it didn’t work out,” she said. Grant called the revelation a “surprise” to him and was super respectful about her religion, especially after she confessed she’d never brought home a man who didn’t follow Mormonism like her.
“I’m nervous what you will think of it. It’s very, very conservative,” she said. “My family is very religious.” Litia then revealed she was raised Mormon in Salt Lake City, Utah and that religion is a major part of her life. “I’m not Mormon. I have tattoos. I have earrings. I do drink sometimes. Will they accept me?” he asked Litia.
“I want God to be a part of my marriage and I want my kids to grow up in a house where they know that God loves them and they’re important and their parents love them, and there’s nothing they can do that would ever make them not loved. That’s very, very important to me,” Litia revealed.
