The Mole is the undercover contestant who tries to go unnoticed and sabotage the cast of winning any money. But the question of whether they win anything for their secret role is raising eyebrows.
Netflix brought back its scheming series where one member of a team is secretly making the huge prize money go down in value. The Mole always makes it to the end and essentially works for production.
The Mole is hired as a show employee
Whoever is assigned The Mole is hired by production as a show employee, and are believed to be paid. Previous moles have admitted they are paid a stipend by Netflix bosses to play the role.
The Mole is someone secretly planted by producers to thwart the competition. Hosted by Alex Wagner, she told Tudum “Even if you know you’re lying to the group, you’ve got to sort of believe in your own lie.”
Her strategy, if she were playing? “Kill them with kindness.” The Mole is said to be paid a flat fee as part of their contract. The amount is never revealed, but payment for early seasons was believed to be $50K.
They don’t win the prize money
The Mole is not given financial bonuses for reducing the prize pot. They are paid a flat fee for their role and the producers decide how much sabotage is needed to hit a desired final pot.
In 2022, the winner took home a $101,500 cash prize! So although The Mole is paid more than the other contestants, the person who is crowned the best cast member ultimately gets paid double.
Netflix fans want a serious twist
The Mole viewers would love to see the undercover contestant win all of the money they lost for the show. Say if they got the prize pot down to $10K, they could just nab the majority of dollar.
One fan wrote, “Wouldn’t it be more enticing if all the $$ the mole caused the group to lose they won in the end?” Another penned, “Absolutely. But the mole also doesn’t want to blatantly sabotage.”
“Because their goal is to go undetected. If they were influenced by the money lost it would be super obvious to everyone (players and viewers). The allure is to figure it out,” suggested another.
