All the advice freshers need to survive first year: Love, Cardiff Uni students who survived
From YOLO to locking in, here’s all you need
Freshers, your first year at university can feel daunting. It is totally normal to feel anxious or nervous; a lot of people feel the same way. But I can assure you, this feeling will pass.
Here is some advice from current Cardiff Uni students to make Freshers’ a little less overwhelming.
1. Say yes to everything
Freshers’ is an amazing time to get out of your comfort zone and experience new things. You honestly can’t knock it till you try it.
There are lots of things to do in Cardiff alongside events organised by the university. You could try a new hobby with your flatmates or join a society that you might not have considered before.
This time is a great time to explore, meet new people and get out of your comfort zone. Just say yes (obviously within reason)!
2. Societies are a great way to meet people

Societies are a perfect place for you to find like-minded people with similar hobbies.
A great place to find out more information about societies is the Freshers’ Fair. The fair takes place Monday to Friday during Freshers’ Week. Every society at Cardiff Uni has their own stall where you can chat to members and ask any questions.
This is a perfect place to scope out all the different societies whilst also meeting the faces behind the societies. You’ll also be informed about Give it a Go Sessions. These sessions provide tasters of the society without a membership needed. Highly recommend going to these.
You can also join The Cardiff Tab to meet some super amazing people. We’re hosting an open meeting on October 6th at Misfits – sign up here.
3. Prepare for Freshers’ Flu
Freshers’ Flu will probably hit you within the first few weeks of uni. Don’t worry, it’s a cannon event. If it doesn’t, the hangover definitely will.
It’s great to come prepared with tablets, medication or other essentials. Pack a care package, just incase (thank me later). The last thing you want to do is walk over to the shops when you are feeling crappy.
4. Don’t compare experiences
It is natural to look at those around you and compare your university experience to theirs. But it’s important to remember that everyone’s uni experience is different. Some people might find their group in the first days and some in the first months. This is totally normal.
Not everyone can have the same experience because that would be so boring. It’s totally fine for things to take some time, don’t put pressure on yourself.
5. Explore the city

As I said, Freshers’ is a great time to experience and explore new things. Cardiff is a super cool city with lots to do. It’s important to not only focus on university life, but also the new city you’re in.
Explore Bute Park, the arcades, Cardiff Castle and many more places. Scope out the local coffee shops or possible pres destinations. Familiarising yourself with the city during the first few weeks can make the uni town feel like home.
6. Familiarise yourself with the campus resources
Cardiff Uni has some amazing campus resources with a variety of information. I know you will get bombarded with these during Freshers’, but it is nice to know where to go if you do need them.
Inside the CSL, the Student Connect desk can help with general queries or point you in the direction of someone who can help. You can also find some great information about job opportunities here.
In terms of academic resources, it’s great to get used to using the student intranet and library resources. It’s also important to know the mental health services within the university. More information can be found on the Cardiff University website.
Also, there are some important numbers within the university for you to make a note of if you ever need them.
Cardiff Uni Student Health and Wellbeing/ Student Connect: 02 9255 18888
Cardiff Uni Security: 029 2087 4444
Dragon Taxis: 02920 333333 (This is a taxi service for Cardiff Uni students)
7. Look up events in the Student Union
Come on, we know the only reason you came to Cardiff Uni is for YOLO.
The Student Union has some amazing events on during both Freshers’ Week and throughout the year. This is a great opportunity for flat bonding and meeting other students.
Not only will the Freshers’ Fair take place here, but there are a range of events going on that cater for everyone. Additionally, if you need a break from going out, the Taf Quiz every Thursday is super fun. Information about Freshers’ events is available on the Cardiff Student Union website.
8. Budgeting
I know budgeting can seem boring and overwhelming, but as a student, it’s worth knowing the perks that are available to you.
Student discount apps such as UNIDAYS and Student Beans are great, providing discounts for a wide range of brands. Also, MIXR is super useful for drink discounts at certain pubs in Cathays and Cardiff City Centre.
It’s important to remember that university, especially during the first few months, can feel super overwhelming. It might take time for things to adjust, but that is totally normal. Welcome to Cardiff Uni and make the most of your time here!
