Influencer called out for ‘tone deaf’ Jamaica holiday videos moaning about hurricane

An influencer is being called out after moaning that Hurricane Melissa has messed with her holiday to Jamaica in a series of viral TikTok videos.

The “extremely deadly” storm made landfall in Jamaica and Cuba this week as a Category 5 hurricane, the most severe on the scale. It’s the worst storm Jamaica has ever had, and it’s caused devastation across the island.

Hannah Grubbs, who has more than 150k followers on TikTok, has been slammed after flying to Jamaica during the storm and writing in a TikTok video: “Hurricane Melissa out here messing with my vacation.”

In the clip, she’s standing on her hotel balcony as the strong winds blow her hair. Another post shows Grubbs and a friend walking through the airport, and text on the screen says: “Just two girls headed to Jamaica in a Category 5 hurricane.”

“Pretending there’s not a Category 5 hurricane hitting Jamaica,” she wrote in a third video where she’s being handed a cocktail by a worker at the hotel. The posts were met with huge backlash.

One person wrote: “This has got to be the most out of touch thing I’ve witnessed by civilians in… I don’t know how long? I hope your CAT 5 experience is as intense as your commitment to the bit? Hoping the people forced to babysit you through it remain safe.”

“This is absolutely and horribly tone deaf— just so you know you are not above the catastrophes that are inevitably going to be caused by this hurricane. I hope it was worth it,” someone else said.

Another wrote: “I would feel so ashamed if people die in this hurricane after purposely travelling there when the locals have no money to leave.”

The influencer has since deleted some of the posts. The Tab has reached out to Hannah Grubbs for comment.
