Halloween is creeping up fast. For anyone who is still in need of inspiration on where to get their Halloween costumes, don’t panic.
Whether you’re heading to a flat party, a Cardiff club night, or have managed to nab a Yoloween ticket (very jel), here’s a list of the best places Cardiff has to offer. All of the following stores are located in the city centre, making it accessible and easy to navigate, and don’t worry – we know you’re on a budget.
1. Primark

Primark is always a good shout for cheap clothes and accessories. We know it can be overwhelming on a Saturday, but bear with us.
With entrances from St David’s Shopping Centre and Queen Street, they sell everything from makeup, nails and bags to onesies and the same t-shirt in every colour. Recently, they dropped Remy and Emile onesies from Ratatouille, perfect for couples or duo costumes. Despite not currently having any student discount offers, the stores are still a great option for anyone on a budget this Halloween.
2. Joke Shop
Come on, any Cardiff student knows The Joke Shop is the go-to.
Your one-stop shop for any costume you could ever think of, it’s conveniently located right opposite Cardiff Castle, making it hard to miss. The shop is filled top to bottom with costumes, masks and face paint.

The infamous Joke Shop lady will welcome you with the brightest smile and is really helpful when making your way through the forest of masks and costumes. However, the shop does get quite crowded closer to Halloween with all the other last-minute warriors eager to get their costumes, so be sure to check it out before your costume gets snatched.
And to top it all off, if you give them a follow on TikTok and Instagram, you get 10 per cent off your purchase!
3. Damaged Society
For all the readers going through their emo and punk phase this Halloween, this is the store for you.
Located through the Queen Street entrance into St David’s Shopping Centre, Damaged Society has everything you could imagine for rocking the edgy look. Shopping for costumes like Mavis from Hotel Transylvania, Wednesday from the Addams Family or as a punk rock group costume, this shop serves exactly that style.
It is on the pricier side, but offers a 10 per cent student discount, which is always a plus.
4. Urban Outfitters
Vintage, retro, Y2K. All words to describe Urban Outfitters, the perfect store for anyone going for a 2000s look this Halloween.
You can find the store on The Hayes near Morgan Arcade. Urban Outfitters does have a Halloween Costumes and Spooky Seasons Outfits selection, but you can also mix-and-match their corsets, tights and shoes, offering a fashionable twist to your costume.
The store also offers 10 per cent off for students, which comes in handy since items definitely lean on the pricier side.
5. Thrift Stores
Thrift stores are a treasure trove for vintage, unique fashion statements, perfect for those choosing costumes with specific items that you might not be able to find in more generic shops.
Whether you’re shopping for Halloween or simply shopping to pass the time, Cardiff is full of hidden gems such as Flamingos Vintage and Coco Blush on Queen Street – and if you search deep enough into the sea of colour, you might just find yourself some vintage designer.
6. Claire’s
Situated through the Queen Street entrance to St David’s Shopping Centre, opposite Damaged Society, Claires is always on top when it comes to fun accessories for any occasion. The stores have everything from jewellery, nails, head accessories, makeup and face paint.
The brand is unfortunately in the process of closing down, so it’s currently doing a 30 per cent off all items offer in store – perfect timing for anyone shopping last minute and on a budget.
