Explaining the bizarre pasta gays meme that came from two boyfriends on Valentine’s Day

The original post now has 148.9 MILLION views

There is a meme on Twitter so enduring that I honestly thought it had been around for at least three years. Turns out 2025 is actually the longest year on record, because this now famous pair of images only became a big meme THIS YEAR. If you don’t know what I’m talking about you must be living a blissful life of not being terminally online, because these poor gays have been absolutely through it. The images are completely inoffensive, nothing problematic has happened, but there have been three instances to my knowledge where this original post has gone so viral that every tweet about it has had millions of views. Hell, the original post has 148.9 million views. Let that sink in. The ‘pasta gays’, the ‘boyfriend twins’ – the meme has been dubbed many things.

But what is actually going on? Why is this so viral? Here’s the best explainer I can muster for true online brain rot.

The original post is completely inoffensive

Twitter user Benji, who goes by the handle @bxnjibxy, shared his first Valentine’s Day with his partner. The post was a picture of the pair of them and a pasta meal – which, fair play, looked unreal. This went viral initially because of people calling out the trope of certain gays’ type being men who look very similar to them.

Because of the endless discourse being spawned, which is a hellish part of posting on Twitter, everyone was laughing about how people nitpick and write think pieces about people they don’t even know on Twitter. These are literally just some guys.

Then came the jokes

The jokes basically call out the discourse by quoting the original post and highlighting a tiny detail. Such as, a crumb on the zipper of one of the guys. That’s one of the biggest in the current resurgence.

There’s also a current viral post saying couple’s Halloween costume idea. And fair play, it’s comedy.

The original poster has barely responded

Benji has only ever acknowledged in little ways and has notably never deleted the post. Fair play to him, he’s got one of the biggest tweets of the year in his history books right here.

Well, are the pasta gays still together?!

The pasta gays from the meme are, as far as I can tell, still thriving. No pictures of them have been deleted – and in June Benji did share a new pic of the pair.
