Instagram just launched a new schools feature – here’s how uni students can actually use it

Finding your classmates is going to be so much easier

Instagram just released a new “schools” feature that could make your college experience a whole lot more social. Instead of just following friends or random accounts, you can now officially link your profile to your uni and find classmates in a private, student-only space.

With the new Instagram schools experience, students can add their uni to their profile, get verified, and then connect with classmates in a dedicated directory. Basically, Instagram isn’t just about who you know anymore; it’s about who you study with, too.

The feature is currently rolling out to U.S. students, and verification is powered by student platform UNiDAYS, which ensures you’re actually enrolled. Think of it as your digital student ID, but with Instagram perks.

And yes, it means your profile can now flex your school banner while also helping you meet new people on your campus.

So, here’s how to use Instagram’s new schools feature

If you want to start connecting with classmates, here’s what to do:

  • Open your Instagram profile and look for the new “Add school” option
  • Complete the verification process via UNiDAYS (this confirms you’re a current student)
  • Once verified, your school shows up as a banner on your profile, you control who can see it
  • Head into the new student directory, where you can:
  • Browse all verified students from your school
  • Filter by class year to narrow things down
  • Connect with classmates instantly

From there, you can start following, messaging, and building your own campus network.

Instagram already plays a big role in how students connect with friends, but now it’s expanding. Whether you’re a fresher trying to meet people or just want to explore shared interests, the new feature makes it a lot easier.

UNiDAYS CEO Jon Hawley said, “This new feature, underpinned by our world-leading verification technology, enables students to build more authentic, meaningful, and secure connections online.”

Instagram says the update is all about making it easier (and safer) to meet classmates in a digital-first world, without the hassle of hunting them down one by one.
