Erm, they’re literally everywhere so here’s why people are going wild for Labubu

Labubus. They’re everywhere right now, you literally can’t escape them on Instagram and TikTok.

They’re these little squishy, creepy-looking toys with mischievous big-eyed faces which have been popping up all over the place, often seen hooked onto luxury designer bags.

They’ve also become a massive trend on the internet, thanks to Lisa from Blackpink, who made Labubus viral after posting numerous pics with the toys.

People have since gone onto buy as many as they can from the collection, however, with one costing £80.

So, why do people love them so much?

Taking to Reddit, some users have said that it’s not that they like the dolls specifically, but that people are just jumping on the latest trend.

One user said: “It’s just influence from celebrities and good marketing, just a current consumerist trend like so many other things.”

Adding, people are desperately behind collecting these plushies, to the extent that “I saw someone’s post that their car windows were broken and someone stole their Labubu. Nothing else, just the Labubu, which is wild.”

However, talking to The Tab, Divya said it was her sister that got her into Labubus: “My sister introduced me to it, and it has become one of the many things that help us bond, given that I live away from home.”

A fellow collector, Jenny, also added that she likes the surprise element behind Labubu, saying: “I honestly just collect it for the surprise factor, the blind box gets me. It is almost like opening a packet of Kinder Joy expecting a surprise gift.” 

But for many people, it is simply just about finding toys to be cute.

A picture of an ombre pink and orange Labubu was captioned: “They will make you smile, how can you resist that tummy, the teeth, and the eyes?” Another user agreed, saying: “I’m getting a cuteness overload.”

Another reason why people like Labubu dolls is because they purely bring them joy. “I have always loved plushies growing up, and now that I can buy myself things, this is one of my hobbies,” wrote another Labubu fan on Reddit.

Although, it’s not always about having a full collection, with one user writing: “I don’t intend on collecting them per se. Like I don’t particularly want or need a complete set. I just want a few to look at or carry around because they make me smile.”

Beyond just being cute, for some adults, Labubu brings back a sense of youth. “They are cute and make me feel happy. Being an adult is boring,” one Instagram user commented.

Another echoed this sentiment: “Honestly, it sparks a little youth and makes me feel like I’m reliving my childhood. Puts a smile on my face.”

So, whether it’s celebrity influence, a love for collecting, or a nostalgic trip back to childhood, Labubus are a fan favourite.
