Labubu dolls are everywhere, but what the hell are they and why are people so obsessed?!

I can’t escape the creepy little things

For months, the internet has been obsessed with these creepy little dolls called Labubus, and it doesn’t look like the craze is going anywhere. Rhianna was spotted with one attached to her Louis Vuitton bag, Dua Lipa had one on her Birkin and Olivia Attwood threw a whole Labubu-themed party.

They’re literally sold out everywhere and people are reselling them for thousands online. Plus, the company had to stop putting them on shelves because of the crowds –  but what actually are they? And why is everyone so god damn obsessed? If you’re confused (so are we tbh), here’s everything you need to know.

Right, what are Labubu dolls?

Labubus are little plushy monsters with rabbit-like ears, a hard plastic face and most importantly, a big smile with sharp pointed teeth.

They’re collectable charms that come in all different colours, outfits and designs and are designed to be clipped onto things like handbags.

The dolls usually retail for about £10 to £17.50, when they’re actually in stock that is, and there are loads of different collections.

Who actually makes them?

They’re made by a Chinese toy company called Pop Mart who actually launched them back in 2019, but the Labubu character existed before that.

It was created by Kasing Lung, an artist born in Hong Kong who designed a series of characters called The Monsters, inspired by Nordic mythology.

He created The Monsters for a series of picture books in 2015, and Labubu is one of the many characters in the series.

And why is everyone so obsessed?

So, why are people going totally gaga for them? Well, how long is a piece of string? Nobody really knows – but it must come down to the collectible design.

The dolls come in individual mystery boxes and you don’t know which one you’re going to get, so there’s that element of surprise that comes with unboxing them.

Remember when you were a kid and you’d be really excited to open a Kinder Egg to see what toy you’d get? Well, it’s basically the adult version of that.

As for the actual dolls, people obviously think they’re cute – but they’re also pretty creepy! I don’t know why you’d want one attached to your £2,000 handbag, but each to their own I guess.
