This dark Hotel Reverie theory will change how you see the Black Mirror episode
Now I’m crying AGAIN
People on TikTok have come up with a dark theory about Black Mirror’s Hotel Reverie that links it with season four’s beloved episode, San Junipero. As we saw in the recently released season seven, Hotel Reverie is about an actress called Brandy Friday being thrust into a pocket dimension where a classic black and white film is playing out. She soon falls in love with Dorothy Chambers, an actress who had long since passed in the real world, but the story does not have a happy ending.
Meanwhile, San Junipero is an episode from season three that follows two old women whose consciousnesses are placed into a digital world called, shocker, San Junipero. But putting aside the similarities in tone and how both stories follow queer women, someone on TikTok has theorised a much darker connection between Black Mirror’s Hotel Reverie and San Junipero.
Could Black Mirror’s Hotel Reverie and San Junipero be linked?
Put forward by TikTok user Tempest (@stormii.senpai), this theory is as crazy as it is realistic, after all, we all know how much Charlie Brooker likes to confuse us with easter eggs, twists, and links to earlier episodes.
Basically, Tempest theorised that Brandy Friday is actually dead in the episode. Her evidence? She lives on Junipero Drive, and we know from the San Junipero episode that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of neighbourhoods in the high-tech digital space. It’s reasonable to suggest that Brandy could be living in one of those neighbourhoods.

“I feel like they’re using Redream and things like that to transfer people to different San Juniperos,” she noted. “The people [in the movie] weren’t just digital people, they are actually dead people from different San Juniperos.”
There’s also the argument that Dorothy remembered her real life inside the movie. Though we viewers were told that Redream pulls in a bunch of other materials besides the film script, there was no way for it to know about Dorothy’s bubbling lesbian desires. With that considered, could she actually just be remembering her life from BEFORE she entered her own San Junipero-style neighbourhood?
Look, I know it’s a little bit shaky, but there are some pretty valid points here, and people on TikTok seemed to agree.
“They probably used the same technology fs, black mirror definitely dropping that name for a reason it would be very interesting if they went deeper into this next season you got me thinking,” one person wrote.
Another said: “OMG you are on to something… got me over here thinking.”
All in all, there were AT LEAST six references to Juniper in Black Mirror season seven, some directly referencing San Junipero.
