Gals, Jacqui Burfoot’s dad spoke out about what she’s really like beyond MAFS Australia

He did not hold back

The MAFS Australia bride Jacqui’s dad, Doog Burfoot, has spoken out about what she’s really like. He wrote a very, very long article about his daughter’s time on the show. Apparently the Jacqui we all saw on TV is “unrecognisable” to her dad. Here’s what he said.

He says Jacqui is very different to how she comes across on screen

Doog wrote in The New Zealand Herald: “The Jacqui you see on MAFS is a highly fictional and twisted avatar of the real person. She is unrecognisable to us and a product of gross editing.”

Doog believes the show was edited to make Jacqui look more “crazy”. He says we only get to see on screen a fraction of what happened, plus “contestants are encouraged to play up for the camera and practice their facial expressions in the mirror.”

Jacqui’s dad claims several moments were edited to make Jacqui look more “crazy” than she is. Apparently when Jacqui said on the show “there’s no one on my level”, she was talking about her past co-workers, not society as a whole. He also says Jacqui never outright lied about being Miss New Zealand, but the producers cut out her explanation of what pageant she actually competed in.

The MAFS Australia crew have repeatedly said they don’t set out to portray particular contestants in a positive or negative light. A producer John Walsh told Pedestrian TV: “There is no villain edit. The villains reveal themselves. We don’t create them. They make their choices.”

Jacqui’s dad says she’s all about ‘reasoning and logic’

Doog has a theory as to why Jacqui doesn’t seem to enjoy the MAFS Australia dinner parties and beefed with lots of other cast members. He said: “Despite a tough exterior, she has always been sensitive and would invariably try to resolve conflict with reasoning and logic. I think that was why she struggled a bit with the Married at First Sight dinner party ‘screamers’ who seemed to constantly vie for the limelight through the ‘he/she who shouts the loudest wins’ theory.”

Jacqui’s parents are delighted she’s engaged to Clint

Clint went to stay with Jacqui’s family in Queenstown, New Zealand after the show was filmed, but before it started airing on Australia. Doog was full of praise for Clint – calling him “a rock” and “fun to be around”. He and Jacqui’s mum are “thrilled” Clint and Jacqui are engaged. Aw.

Um, but he did say she went on the show for fame?

Er, apparently Jacqui’s parents “weren’t overly happy” she was going on MAFS Australia.

Doog said: “Her reason, we think, was probably for opportunity… to go through the door to see what’s there: love, fame, fortune, or just the adventure of the unknown and the discovery of new doors to open.”

This is somewhat different to Jacqui’s past comments. She has repeatedly said she went on the show because she was eager to find a long-term partner to start having children with.

Apparently Jacqui did invite her parents to her MAFS wedding, but they said they “would prefer to go to her real wedding”.

This is similar to the reason why Jacqui wore a blue dress to her wedding, while all the other brides wore white.
