Here’s which new Lady Gaga song from MAYHEM best suits your Lancaster course

Obviously Disease was written for biomedicine students

It’s been nearly two weeks since Lady Gaga dropped her seventh album MAYHEM and I’m already slightly concerned about how it’s going to affect my Spotify Wrapped at the end of this year.

With fourteen hits showcasing Gaga’s range and evolution over the seventeen years since The Fame, MAYHEM definitely lives up to its name in the best way possible. From its emotional piano ballad Blade Of Grass to the 80s-inspired electro-funk banger Killah, there’s something for everyone from any department so here’s what we recommend based on your course.

Biomedicine – Disease

Starting with an obvious one, Disease is practically the theme song for biomedicine students. The lyrics “I could play the doctor, I can cure your disease” should be inspirational for every future doctor at Lancaster.

Theatre studies – Abracadabra

With its dramatic lyrics and music video, this classic Gaga dance-pop song is perfect for theatre students. When Lady Gaga sings “Choose the road on the west side”, she’s also referring to Defying Gravity in Wicked when Elphaba sings “look to the western sky”, trust. Abracadabra is also definitely designed for Pendle students, with its reference to casting spells and witches.

Geography – Garden of Eden

Although this song could apply to literature and global religions students, with its biblical references, I would recommend Garden of Eden to geography students due to its natural imagery. Also because they’re more likely to be able to read a map to “take you to the Garden of Eden” or Sultans.

Engineering – Perfect Celebrity

Engineering has a reputation for being difficult so students on this course will probably resonate with Perfect Celebrity’s lyric: “My brain, it aches.” However, it is also known as a very useful course so hopefully in the future engineering students will also relate to the lyric: “You make me money.” Perfect Celebrity is also probably popular with theatre students who literally want to be a perfect celebrity.

Computer science – Can’t Stop The High (Bonus Track)

Like engineering students, those studying computer science will also be able to relate to the lyric “fear won’t subside / As the panic sets in”, especially with the dreaded exam season coming up. The lyric “gotta shut it down” can also link to when a computer shuts down.

Business management – Vanish Into You

Business students should be able to relate to this song ever since half the Management School has vanished “like a ghost”. The reflective tone of this ballad definitely mirrors how I’m still mourning not being able to walk straight through Management to the other side since the construction work began

Criminology – Killah

All about “killahs”, criminology students would probably enjoy this song as they have the skills for finding a “murderer in disguise”. I’d also recommend Killah to DELC students, as it features French artist Gessafelstein.

Biology – Zombieboy

Like most STEM majors, biology students will relate to “lookin’ angry and tired / Like you’ve been up for days” during deadline season. Those wanting to pursue zoology will probably enjoy Zombieboy’s animal imagery such as “like a lion on the hunt”.

English literature and creative writing – LoveDrug

Not to be confused with LoveGame from The Fame, LoveDrug is designed for ELCW students who’ve “got a poem” in their throats. Also the lyric “I won’t escape these thoughts that I dread” shows how English students are always overthinking everything (I’m calling myself out here).

Psychology – How Bad Do U Want Me

With lyrics about being “in your brain” and “on your mind, like, all the time”, I’d recommend this song to psychology students, who know all about the mind. They can also psychoanalyse why this song is arguably the most divisive song on the album.

Physics – Don’t Call Tonight

As it’s nearly the end of Lent term, physics students are probably far too busy to answer phone calls. Don’t call them tonight!

Law – Shadow Of A Man

“Life ain’t under pressure” for law students because they always tend to have a plan and won’t be “left to cry”. They’ll know about feeling like they’re in “the eye of the storm” in courtroom cases.

Sports and exercise science – The Beast

Sports science students will be able to resonate with feeling “out of breath” and like “Your heart’s racin’”, lyrics Gaga sings on The Beast. But then again, so will anyone who’s had to rush to their 9am class.

Environmental science – Blade Of Grass

With references to nature including a “garden made of thorns” and “lawn of memories”, Blade of Grass was written for environmental science students. This standout ballad about Gaga’s engagement to Michael Polansky can also reflect STEM students’ dedication to the environment.

History – Die With A Smile

It’s safe to say that Die With A Smile earned its place in history as both one of the biggest hits of last year and the most popular song on MAYHEM. Reminiscent of both Lady Gaga’s and Bruno Mars’ earlier classics from the 2010s, this song’s nostalgic vibes is perfect for History students.
