Pottery painting and picnics: Here’s your ‘blooming’ good guide to Lancaster this spring

Let’s spring into spring!

March has blossomed upon us, and glimpses of springtime are starting to show. The skies are brighter, and the air is beginning to feel a tad warmer… So, we’re introducing our guide for spring in Lancaster, with activities and all you need to know, to have the perfect transition into summer.

Spring cleaning

What better way to embrace a fresh start than by doing some cleaning – hence the term spring cleaning! Time for a refresh after the January and February blues, by having a sort out – you can tidy and clean your room, kitchen or bathroom, getting into corners you’ve yet to venture into. You can also re-organise your study space, a little tidy up is good for the soul and decluttering the mind.

Or, have a rummage through your wardrobe and get rid of anything you don’t wear anymore, and instead of throwing out the clothes you no longer wear, you can donate them to Lancaster University’s sustainability shop, ReStore.

Coffee dates

We no longer have to be cooped up indoors; now we can sit outside and enjoy our drinks while the sun warms our cheeks. Brew, in town, has budding spring aromas and a cosy interior with a perfect outdoor seating area. Also, check out seasonal drinks while you can; Coastal & Co. in Alexandra Square, have many drink combinations to try, like their Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte.

If in town, Starbucks also has limited-edition Spring-inspired drinks, including an Iced Lavender Latte.

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is coming up on the 30th March! Send some warm love by sending a card, or a personal gift. Some gift ideas could be: Their favourite chocolates, self-care goodies or something personalised, like a mug. If the money is running low, you can always get creative with what you have – make a card or letter, or have a go at origami, to show how much you care.

If you’re willing, stand in the university’s infinite Greggs queue for a gift card, so mums can get their favourite treats (You can’t go wrong with a sausage roll).

Longer and brighter days

On the 30th March, the clocks move forward one hour, so make sure you don’t forget to move your clocks. Enjoy the extra time we’ve been given by walking outdoors, try the Woodland Trail if you haven’t already and look at any new flowers you can spot that have grown and pick a few to decorate your newly cleaned room with.

Easter

It’s almost Easter! This is a wonderful chance to get together with loved ones and show them you care, by gifting them their favourite chocolate Easter egg, baking some treats and decorating them (with those little fluffy chicks) or getting creative with arts and crafts, such as painting your own eggs  — Pendle is hosting an Easter egg decoration on March 5th, so keep an eye out on the colleges’ social media for Easter updates.

Picnics

What better way to enjoy the new and warmer season than with a picnic and friends – an ideal spot is Williamson Park. It has great views of Lancaster and has so much space that you’re guaranteed a good spot for your blanket and basket. Fill your basket (or SPAR bag – let’s be realistic) with everything from sweet to savoury, and if you want to spice up the outing more, sneak a bottle of rosé in your basket.

Pottery painting

It’s niche and fun for everyone, no matter your creative abilities, and that is pottery painting. It’s a great way to spend time with friends, or alone. Painting is therapeutic and a definite stress reliever – which we need with final assessments and exams approaching. Head to Potty Roo’s Ceramics in Morecambe for some pottery painting, it’s a small studio and you only pay for what you paint so it’s quite affordable. The colleges around the university hold events very similar to this one, so make sure to check for updates.
