You’ll relate to these five things if you’re an international student at Exeter University
It’s a daily struggle for real
Being away from home was difficult for me and coming to university felt like a challenge. There was self-doubt and anxiety all around. But having spent a few months at Exeter, it’s getting easier every day. The beautiful campus, the people I’ve met, and being independent have been a fun ride. However, there are still moments when I feel the struggle. It’s important to recognise these and remember that we’re in it together. So, here’s a list of things only international students can relate to.
If you’re an international student, these should be no surprise to you.
1. New cultural shocks everyday
You would think you would be used to staying in the UK and accepting the new norms by now, right? No. I find myself discovering new things every day, where some things are bizarre to me but normal to my flatmates. In class, at home, at stores – everywhere is a new place to learn. If you’ve never been to the UK before, you’ll understand how it feels to get used to the culture.
2. Getting excited to hear your language
It’s always a treat to hear your home town’s language or your mother tongue in a foreign place. But it’s extra special after a 4:30pm lecture and an exhausting day when you hear a faint whisper of your home. I have caught myself eavesdropping on phone calls just to bask in that sweet, sweet language. I’m sure you can relate to its warm hug if you’re staying away from home.
3. Queuing up at the international cafe
Most Read
The real ones know the struggle of waking up early on Wednesday and Friday mornings for the weekly International Cafe’s at ISCA Eats. Along with the long queue for a pastry and drink on top of that. We can all agree that we wouldn’t wake up for a 9:30am but we would for these free treats and the hangouts with friends.
4. Missing home food
The worst part of university is the lack of authentic home food. Some days you crave your mother’s treats or your local shop’s desserts after a long day of work. Or even on great days when you want to celebrate, and you miss your fam. Food brings us closer to home and you inevitably crave something from back there.
5. Waiting for your culture’s club nights
While the food may not always be available, the music certainly is. With so many cultural societies at Exeter, there is constantly something to look forward to. Like Asian Soc and Korean Soc who always have the best events. Dancing the night away to your local tunes is the best way to relieve university stress and reconnect with your roots. I’m sure I’m not the only one eagerly waiting for the next cultural club night.
