Russell Group unis that rake in money renting out students’ bedrooms to other people
I would pay money not to use a student kitchen tbh
We all pay a small fortune to rent glorified shoeboxes in student halls. But it turns out large companies voluntarily pay even more money for people to stay in these rooms. Loads of unis across the UK – including fancy Russell Group unis – are making a small fortune by renting out your student accommodation during the holidays to large corporations for conferences and summer camps and whatnot.
The i Paper and Lavanda asked UK universities how much money they’ve made by hiring out student accommodation to non-students since the 2021/2022 academic year. Here are the Russell Group unis which have raked in the most cash by renting out your bedroom in student accommodation during the holidays.
4. Queen Mary University of London – £4,378,000
Queen Mary has been hiring out student rooms more and more over the last few years. In the 2021/2022 academic year, the uni made £848,000 from renting out accommodation in the holidays. But in the 2023/2024 year, the uni made a whopping £2.1 million.
3. King’s College London – £5,753,342
Most of the accom owned by King’s is in central London, and their halls in Vauxhall even have a view of the London Eye. So it makes sense that big companies hire these rooms out for conferences.
2. University of Nottingham – £9,559,799

You can even pay to have your wedding at Nottingham Uni’s Trent building, if you feel so inclined

Companies can hire out auditoriums and other facilities across the three main campuses – University Park, Jubilee Campus and Sutton Bonnington Campus. The Notts Uni website says people can hire out over 4,000 bedrooms over 22 weeks of the year.
1. University College London (UCL) – £14,913,266
University College London (UCL) makes more money by renting out student accommodation to non-students than any other uni in the UK. I guess because the uni is right in the centre of London, it can get away with charging loads of money for each room?
