Every Final Destination movie ranked by how badly you wouldn’t want to be in it
The tanning bed scene has forever scarred me
The Final Destination movies are great for one reason: You know exactly what you’re going to get. However, in a much more real sense, you also have no idea what you’re going to get. The beauty of the franchise is to scar you mentally in ways you totally didn’t expect but you just can’t look away from. Each film is horrifyingly gruesome in its own special way, so here’s a ranked list of every Final Destination movie based on just how badly you wouldn’t want to be in them.
5. The Final Destination
I’m not sure why the producers of The Final Destination decided to drop the 4 from its title (just to bring it back for the fifth movie), but this film deserves to be at the bottom of the list.
There’s just no wow factor at all, and the opening scene at the Speedway track didn’t hit as well as the other films – especially not the rollercoaster scene from Final Destination 3.
Aside from the underwhelming opening, the film just looks visually crap. There’s actually a reason for this, and it’s because the film was designed to be watched in 3D. Yep, instead of thinking of everyone streaming it on Netflix years later, the filmmakers were prioritising those who’d go into the cinema with those awful paper 3D glasses. Every time there’s a kill, something huge pops out of the screen and it just looks awful. It’s gutting too, because it was written by the same guy who wrote Final Destination 2 and 3, which are higher up on this list.
4. Final Destination 2
Most Read
I did enjoy Final Destination 2, but I feel it’s very complicated for a movie with such a simple concept. It does need an honourable mention for the van carrying logs scene, which was lethal, but overall it’s a very confusing vibe.
Firstly, it tries to resolve the stories of the two survivors from the first movie, but it only brings back one of them. Then, it just makes up some brand new rules about pregnancy and skipping the correct death order. It’s just not as simple as it should be, and that’s what lets it down.
3. Final Destination 5
I’m not sure how Final Destination 5 managed to be great after being shot in 3D and complicating itself with loose ends like the previous two I’ve ranked, but it’s a LOT better. It’s funny, it’s gross and it’s super satisfying. It revived the franchise that seemed to have literally run out of horrifying ideas to kill people.
The initial disaster of this film is a lot better than the others, with a collapse taking centre stage. Isn’t that everyone’s worst fear while walking over a bridge? It’s terrifying, and the death scenes are just as good.
Also, unlike the previous two films, all the people who are saved in the beginning premonition actually know one another, and somehow this makes the story a million times better.
As much as I hate to admit it, we need to put some respect to the laser eye surgery death. It’s AWFUL.
2. Final Destination
You can’t argue that the original Final Destination is cinematic history. It’s not the best movie in the franchise, sure, but it was the first, meaning it defined the series to come.
It was way ahead of its time as a concept given that it was released in 2000 on the back of classic teen slashers like Scream. It had hot, young actors, but instead of riding on the wave of what had come before it, it focused on making viewers question mortality and the inevitability of death. A real groundbreaking moment for scary films!
1. Final Destination 3
There is no argument that Final Destination 3 has to be ranked as the best of all the movies, and in that also the worst. Nothing will ever scar me as much as the tanning bed scene, I’m sorry to say. Watching that as a pre-teen defined the grungy teenager I would become.
Aside from that, Final Destination 3 is a great film because it’s had 2 previous movies to explain what’s actually going on, meaning you already know the gist of the movie before you watch it. It just cracks on with what we’re all here to see, and it’s why some of the deaths seem to be longer and much more tense than the rest of them.
