University of Lincoln to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day with act of remembrance

The event will take place on Monday 27th January at 7pm

The University of Lincoln will be holding an event to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

Led by UoL History Society, the university will be joining a nationwide act of remembrance for Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday 27th January 2025.

The evening will begin at 7pm in MB0312. It is expected to end at 8:30pm.

Holocaust Memorial Day aims to remember the victims of the Nazi’s genocide against Jewish people and other minority groups, leading up to and during the Second World War.

The mass killings perpetuated by the Nazi Party led to the deaths of one third of Jewish people as well as members of many other minority groups such as LGBTQ+ people and Romas.

The 27th January has been chosen as the international Holocaust Memorial Day, due to it being the day the Red Army liberated Auschwitz in 1945.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

Holocaust Memorial Day has been a national commemoration day since 2001, supported by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust since 2005. The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2025 is “For A Better Future“.

The evening will start with a discussion about the Holocaust and its significance in shaping a better future.

The society will also reflect on personal stories whilst exploring lessons from history. There will be an opportunity for attendees of the event to reflect and share their own thoughts.

At 8pm, the society will join others across the nation in lighting the Holocaust Memorial Day candle to symbolise hope and shine a light in the darkness.

The event is open to all, and the society would love for as many people as possible to join them in reflecting and remembering this vital part of history. They ask that those wishing to attend reserve a free ticket to help keep track of attendance and make the event as impactful as possible.

Please be aware that some of the topics discussed may be sensitive.
