It’s all a bit confusing, so what year is American Primeval actually set in?
There are a lot of clues
American Primeval is one of the newest series to land on Netflix, with the show being based on real events, and focusing on the conflict between the Natives, pioneers, Mormon soldiers and the U.S. government. American Primeval showcases the tension between Brigham Young and the Natives in particular whilst he was trying to establish Mormonism, but what year is the show actually set in?
The show is set in the year 1867 with American Primeval taking place in Utah Territory which now falls within the state of Utah. On-set filming locations included Mew Mexico and Sante Fe, with only two days out of the 130-day filming schedule being spent filming indoors.
In order to help create an authentic series as it’s set in the year 1876, the production team behind American Primeval even built an exact replica of Fort Bridger.
Fort Bridger was an actual building and in the 1850s was used as a trading post for those heading West.
Writer and executive producer of American Primeval, Mark Smith, told Tudum how important it was for them to build the fort to help create the illusion the show was set in the year 1876.
He explained: “It was used by all the pioneers [and] the Mormons. It was the stopping ground. When President Buchanan decided he wanted to get control of Brigham Young and what was growing in Utah, he stationed his military there. Fort Bridger was the gathering point for everyone.”

He continued: “There are hundreds of massive, 80-foot trees that were used to build the walls around Fort Bridger. Back in the 1850s, there were no power tools so that had to be cut by hand with axes, and those construction guys were out there every day building that set with hand tools.”
The team actually decided to build the set larger than the real life version of Fort Bridger because production “wanted to have so much life there. It became like a small village. We had shops, and we had a dentist and a doctor, and baths and things that were accurate to that time period. Fort Bridger took on a life of its own.”
I honestly think if I had been acting on that American Primeval set I would genuinely would have thought I was in the year 1876.
