Insanely clever talent The Recruiter has makes him the creepiest Squid Game character

How does he do that?!

If you’ve watched Squid Game season two, you’ll know who the creepiest character is. It’s not the Front Man, or the suspicious boat captain – it’s The Recruiter.

He’s the man in the smart black suit whose job it is to find people and recruit them to play the games, and there’s something about him that’s just so scary. But why?!

Well, it’s all thanks to a simple but clever acting technique that Gong Yoo does. The actor can make both sides of his face show two completely different emotions.

So, on one side he’ll be smiling and looking happy and cocky, while the other side looks totally miserable, meaning you never really know what he’s thinking or feeling.

Even his eyes show different emotions, a crazy talent that not many people can successfully do, and it’s what makes his character so incredibly terrifying.

The combination of the actor not having a symmetrical face, some really good lighting that creates shadows on his face, and great acting all make this possible.

People are applauding his technique on Reddit, with one person writing: “It’s as if he had two different facial expressions at the same time. One half scared to death, another half is being cocky. What an actor.”

“It’s a mark of a talented actor. Having two completely different emotions on each side of the face confuses the person you’re talking to on a deep psychological level,” another agreed.

He’s only a minor character, but the Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told RadioTimes he has a dark backstory.

“I believe that Gong Yoo’s character [The Recruiter] is someone who lived a difficult, tough, rock-bottom life, just as much as those that are depicted as the homeless people in the series,” he said.

“And he is someone who is so filled with self-hatred, it is expressed in the hatred he harbours for other humans. And by hating these people, he believes that he is different from them.”

“[He is] showing and expressing his hatred for the people who choose lottery tickets instead of bread, almost as if he’s trying to escape his own self-loathing nature.”
