The Nosferatu director reveals the ‘demented’, disgusting scene he had to cut from the film

I feel sick you guys

Nosferatu when it first came out as a 1920s, silent German film was deemed “a symphony of horror” – and this is exactly the kind of statement you could use to describe Robert Eggers new version. Nosferatu is a harrowing, gothic masterpiece of vampire alluring spookiness – filled with as much repulsive disgust as it is sexual desire and mystique. If you thought the film couldn’t get any more scary and gross, you’d be wrong – director Robert Eggers just revealed one scene that had to be cut from Nosferatu for being too ‘demented’. Blurgh.

SPOILERS FOR NOSFERATU AHEAD!

It’s all in that grim and visceral ending

So, the finale of Nosferatu sees Ellen be the focus of Count Orlok’s affection, and as the plague ravages Wisburg and the men go on a wild goose chase to hunt down the vampire – Ellen has plotted to sacrifice herself and give herself to Orlok so that no more can die and so she can kill him in the process.

Because Count Orlok is down so bad for Ellen, he makes love to her and drains her of her blood but as he’s doing so the sun rises and he dies from exposure.

Robert Eggers explained though how the visceral ending shot was meant to be even more disgusting, but the crew had to change it as it was so hilariously vile it killed the vibe.

“If you watch the movie again, you might notice that the back holes in the vampires are still bleeding. His eyes are still bleeding, [Count Orlok’s] ears are still bleeding in that final shot. And we also rigged it so that like, his anus was bleeding,” the filmmaker added. “It didn’t seem quite as emotionally effective. And we literally had to put a cork in it.”

Not LITERALLY put a cork in it… For god’s sake.

Eggers called the scene “demented” to Variety: “if you look very closely at that shot, Orlok is still bleeding out of his eyes, ears and nose. There are some maggot holes in his back.”

What a film, but that Nosferatu cut scene is for the best. Blurgh.
