People have cracked what the ‘2:17’ in Weapons actually means and it makes so much sense
I can rest easily now
I feel like ever since I saw Weapons two weekends ago every single part of the film has occupied all my thoughts without mercy. Small details of Zach Cregger’s second film Weapons haunt my every move. I’ve analysed every single thing about Aunt Gladys. I’ve thought about all the inspirations and themes that have inspired it – but nothing has pestered me more than why the kids all ran out at 2:17am. We know it’s because that’s when Gladys finished her ritual, and people initially thought it was all a red herring that the time would have any significance. Now, someone has a theory that has finally made it click that the 2:17 significance in Weapons actually has a deeper meaning.
This has made my overactive brain rest much more peacefully.
The 2:17 is actually way more important with this deeper meaning theory
At 2:17 AM, all the kids from Justine Gandy’s class did that now iconic run and fled their classrooms. We then see the 2:17 again in Archer’s dream, when the 2:17 is under the massive gun over his house in the sequence. This led to a lot of conversation about how Weapons was possibly inspired by school shootings. But that 2:17 looking like an ammo count is potentially even more significant.

When I first watched Weapons, I thought the focusing on 2:17 was going to be important and then there was sort of the revelation that Gladys just happened to break the stick that caused the children to run at 2:17 AM and it was all just by chance. But then someone pointed out on TikTok that the 2:17 in Weapons actually has a deeper meaning, and that it represents her victims. Firstly, the two parents of Alex – and then the 17 kids she subsequently curses.
The 2:17 under the gun show an ammo count in the dream – because those people are Gladys’ ammunition. They are her weapons as well as those that she feeds off – the ammo that is keeping her alive. My mind is blown.
