Student at Brunel, University of London wins national medical competition
Students were asked to create a piece of media on a new medical licensing assessment
A student at Brunel, University of London has won a national competition held by the General Medical Council (GMC) and the Medical Schools Council (MSC).
Eshwa Zahra, a third year medical student at Brunel, won with her short animated video illustrating the intentions of the new Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA).
The competition was open to all medical students in the UK to promote the new regulatory assessment as well as help students develop their professional skills.
Eshwa’s video won her £300 in vouchers and will be shared with all UK medical schools to explain the MLA, which will be a requirement for all medical students in the UK to become a doctor.
According to the GMC the competition aimed “to create online content [to] help other students understand the Medical Licensing Assessment, its purpose and how it will contribute to patient safety.”
Talking about her video, Eshwa said: “I wanted to highlight the bigger picture and the purpose behind the exam, reassuring ourselves, our future employers, colleagues, and patients that we have the core knowledge, skills, and behaviours necessary for safe medical practice.”
On Eshwa’s entry, Clare Owen, Assistant Director of the Medical Schools Council explained: “We saw such a great variety of submissions this year and everyone who took part should feel proud of themselves.
“The winner’s submission however was especially strong, being both informative and reassuring about what the MLA will involve for students and how it contributes to patient safety. The production was also impressive, making it a very enjoyable and entertaining watch!”
