Get the mince pies ready, these are the best shows like Black Doves to binge over Christmas
I’m patiently waiting for season two
It’s been almost three weeks since its release, but Black Doves is still holding space – especially as it’s Keira Knightley’s first big project back in what’s felt like forever. In her return to the big screen, she plays Helen well in the mildly comedic spy thriller and had me captivated from the first episode. And that’s despite the fact that I’ll probably always see her as a sporty tomboy from west London after Bend It Like Beckham.
Even if you binge watched the series in a matter of days, there are plenty of shows that bring the same blend of espionage, political intrigue, and complex character dynamics. These are all the shows like Black Doves that should satisfy your craving for thrilling narratives over Christmas and the New Year.
The Diplomat
If you didn’t obsess over The Diplomat last year, now is your chance. Set amid an international crisis, the two season series follows a diplomat who struggles to navigate her career and her marriage with a political star. Unfortunately the protagonist is American so you won’t get any Keira Knightley style dialogue but it’s also a thriller, so will emulate the same vibes. You’re welcome.
Bodyguard
If you liked the morally complex characters in Black Doves, you’ll love Bodyguard. Richard Madden stars as David Budd, a war veteran turned bodyguard and became assigned to protect a high profile politician. It’s insanely tense and will fill the Black Doves shaped hole in your life until we get a season two.

Most Read
When I saw the cast in this series I had to trust the process, but the vision paid off. Played by Sacha Baron Cohen, Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline, the series kicks off when a journalist comes across a novel which reveals how she’s been entwined in a dark story, and her darkest secret has been exposed. It’s worth watching just to see Sacha in a semi serious role in all honesty.
Curfew
Slightly different from the storyline of Black Doves, Curfew follows the story of a woman’s body after she was brutally murdered during the night. One female police officer is adamant that a man must have killed her, but living in a world where men have a strict curfew of 7pm to 7am, her theory is rejected. I’m sat.
Killing Eve
A classic, so if you haven’t already seen it then now is the time. The four season show is full of twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat (or sofa) as it follows the turbulent relationship between MI6 agent, Eve, and psychopathic assassin, Villanelle. The hype around this show is more than justified. The emotional mind games will have you hooked.
Before
Whilst many shows like Black Doves are spy related, this psychological thriller explores the chilling connection between a child psychologist and his patient, but is perfect to emulate the same feelings of suspense. It’s currently on Prime Video and Apple TV.
The Night Agent
If you’re looking for another thriller with a bit of a political edge, this show follows a low-level FBI agent who gets tanged up in a conspiracy involving a mole in the government. It’s one of the more fast paced shows like Black Doves which will keep you on your toes.
Treason
If another British spy thriller is just what you’re looking for, this five episode mini series explores the life of an MI6 agent whose career is put in jeopardy after a Russian spy resurfaces from his past. Whilst it might not have Kiera Knightley, it stars Noah Centineo and you just can’t be mad at that.
A Man on the Inside
This one’s a film, but its still worth your time as it features the same mystery feel and stars Ted Danson who we know and love from The Good Place. The movie follows the life of a retired professor who is hired by a private investigator to go undercover inside a retirement home. It might not sound gripping but its performing well according to Rotten Tomatoes, so its worth putting on your Christmas binge list.
