The Charli XCX Apple dance creator just spilled on how she got her viral TikTok into Fortnite

As a long time Charli XCX fan who also has been playing Fortnite since 2017, seeing the iconic viral Apple dance hit them item shop this weekend has been huge for me. Being able to dance to one of the biggest breakout hits from Brat in my favourite game is everything to me, and the one person Charli XCX has to thank for the success of Apple and the fact her song is in Fortnite is Kelley Heyer. Kelley Heyer has had the best year of her life, being shot into the limelight for creating the Apple dance for Charli XCX and she’s now just spilled about how the dance got into Fortnite.

For those unaware, Fortnite has emotes for players to use when in a match or a lobby. They have no advantage on gameplay, but they’re just a fun way of showing some personality in the game and a lot of people use them after eliminating another player or after winning a match. As the game got bigger, licensed emotes and dances hit the game for popular songs – and Charli XCX saw the Apple dance hit Fortnite on Friday.

Since it was Kelley Heyer who came up with the viral routine that’s dominated the FYP this year, she actually spilled a little about what the contract was like with Epic Games to get the dance in Fortnite.

“I had no idea it would happen today, Friday the 13th,” Kelley explained when the dance dropped last week. “But the Apple dance is now on Fortnite. Whilst I only interacted with them over email, the whole Fortnite team were super easy to work with. They reached out in August, and we signed a contract in October. And then they told me the dance would be released around Christmas time. But here it is two weeks early!

“As of right now, Fortnite is the only video game platform that has a signed contract to license the dance from me. So yeah, I don’t play Fortnite but I hope you enjoy the dance. I can’t wait to see a load of random characters doing it. That’s so wild. Life is so wild!”
