The Ultimatum creator talks scrapping season three after two couples quit the show
It’s a mess
The Ultimatum creator has addressed having to think about scrapping season three, after two couples shockingly quit the show. In the first drop of episodes, a lot went down. It really threw the show.
After the six season three couples chose new partners to live out a “trial marriage” with, two of those abruptly left. In the middle of the night, they packed up and left it all behind. Chanel and Micah and Vanessa and Dave decided the show was too much for them.
“Earlier in the day, Dave, Vanessa, Micah, and Chanel secretly met off camera,” a title card read. “That evening, surveillance cameras captured them packing. Dave, Vanessa, Micah, and Chanel quickly departed, abruptly ending their experience.”
Nick and Mariah were shown arriving at the apartments to learn that their new partners had packed up and left without saying a word. Messy!
Show creator Chris Coelen has since revealed in an interview with Variety if he straight up considered scrapping The Ultimatum season three, following all this drama. In the chat, he was asked what the “internal conversations” were like after the couples left. Plus, if he ever had to “consider scrapping the season altogether.”
He said: “No. For me, as a witness to the participants who go through this experience, I think it’s fascinating, no matter what happens. Whether people make it all the way through, they don’t make it all the way through. Whatever they do… Things happen, things change. And I think from a storytelling point of view, we just really commit to trying to follow the stories, wherever those stories go.

“Part of the fallout is much more about what that does to the other participants than what it does with us. Seeing it through the lens of the other participants, I can certainly see why it would make the other participants upset. Or frustrated or betrayed, even.
“But we are always supportive of people’s choices. For me, it’s just documenting what happens inside of the experience [which is] the most interesting thing as a storyteller. And then as a person and as a producer, it’s supporting whatever choices people decide to make.”
He added he did reach out to the cast members afterwards, but didn’t ask them to come back.
