How to successfully survive exam season as a Glasgow student
Successfully surviving exam season is a whirlwind, so work hard and play hard to conquer this winter
The end of the semester is rapidly approaching and that means exams are too. It is important to highlight that there is no overall “right” way or set standard for talking exam period. Everybody’s brain works differently. However, that is not to say there aren’t methods and habits that do make surviving exam season easier, so read on to discover them!
Time
The first thing that needs to be considered in the lead up to exams is time.
With what feels like minimal daylight, it sometimes feels difficult to have a productive day. Adopting a new positive habit as part of your daily routine adds that sense of structure to work with. It also positively influences how you divide your time between personal life and university.
Knowing how your time is going to be spent and using it in a positive way will help you thrive as it gives you more time to prepare for assessment and can (hopefully) avoid pulling all-nighters.
Health
The second key factor in surviving this time is taking care yourself both mentally and physically. It may not make or break it but restorative sleep, hearty and nutritious meals, hydration, and movement all factor in good performance and completion of exams and assignments.
It’s hard to think about all the healthy habits a person should have because it doesn’t feel like there is time to do everything. Realistically, we are all just trying to get through university one day at a time. It’s okay to not have it all down or to figure it out as you go along.

Making the attempt to introduce good and healthy habits like cooking something for yourself that isn’t pesto pasta, taking your neglected water bottle to uni, making time during long study days to go to the gym, and going to bed at a reasonable time, is half the battle already won.
Work hard, play hard
Last but not least, the final key factor to successfully surviving is to take your university work seriously, but also find balance with the rest of life.
The whole point of university is to get a higher education while also enjoying your time as a student. Making memories, friends, connections and exploring life as a student sets up your future just as much as the results of exams. It’s completely acceptable to want both seriousness and fun, and we all choose to balance this in various different ways.
Work hard, but don’t forget to play hard too and reward yourself after an exam with some time away from the library, a sweet treat, a pint with friends, or a walk in the park. Enjoy your time, experience life at full capacity, and work to be the person that you want to see. That is the key to successfully surviving this exam season.
