Phew, the winter tent is finally back

| UPDATED

Now that we’ve just about recovered from our Halloween hangovers, it’s time to turn to the most wonderful time of year which is fast approaching. That’s right – Christmas is nearly upon us.

So, in order to get into the Christmas spirit we’ve found the most fun and festive activities in Leeds to get you to step into Christmas this year.

Leeds University Union: Winter Fest 2024

To set things off, the Leeds University Union Winter Fest is back and better than ever. If you want to grab a cup of warming mulled wine, the winter tent has been open since 5th November and has the perfect Christmas atmosphere to kick-start your festive spirit.

Some of the biggest highlights this year are the new and improved Beer Festival taking place at the end of November. What better than a pint or five to get us in the winter mood?

The Chrimbo Bingo event will also take place this year, on 5th December, and promises to be full of laughs and vibes- perfect for end of term. All dates and events are listed on the union’s website – so what are you waiting for?

Go and pencil your next Bailey’s hot chocolate fix into your diary.

Leeds Christmas shows

To add a bit of culture to your Christmas activities, why not also check out one of the many exciting shows coming to Leeds this year?

In theatres across the city you can find the Northern Ballet’s performance of A Christmas Carol, or transport yourself to Narnia and take in a showing of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at the Leeds Playhouse.

Plus, what screams Christmas like the line: “He’s behind you!” A very unique rock and roll pantomime of Jack and the Beanstalk is coming which is sure to get you in the mood.

If tradition is important to you, the annual Lord Mayor’s carol service will be held on 19th December this year and these nostalgic events are always full of joyous Christmas sing-a-longs, fun and hopefully a minced pie.

Christmas meal deals

If you’re looking for a festive meal with friends this year, here are some fab Christmas set menu ideas which could be the perfect addition to your to-do list.

For a less traditional meal, both Pizza Punks and Pieminister are offering a special menu in the run up to the big day which includes a Punkmas dinner and the Cracker pie option.

However, if a more fancy, conventional roast tickles your turkey, Cut and Craft are also offering a set menu of three courses for £55 which will please all of your winter tastebuds.

Looking to go rogue this year? Why not dine in Italy this Christmas by testing out Riva Blu. They are offering a totally affordable European selection – including the dishes polpette, orata and gelato misto.

Finding these made me very hungry.

Get your craft on

If you’re the artsy type looking for something completely different this year, Harewood House is holding events from a bauble painting workshop to a knitted Christmas pudding workshop as part of its Christmas series.

Definitely check out the details on its website to secure your spot to make special, lasting memories.

Northern Lights Leeds

If you are looking for something memorable and magical to do this year, why not venture a little further to see the first ever Leeds light display walk? Temple Newsam is offering a circular route which includes festive moments from the “star scape” to “lantern trees” to its “light up the sky” finale.

With plenty of food, drink and photos opportunities available and coming in at just under £20, tickets are selling fast.

Go and grab one, and have a truly unique experience this Christmas!

Leeds Christmas markets 2024

And, finally- what we have all been waiting for. The famous Leeds Christmas market returned on 22nd November, full of foods, gifts and fun.

Some have found it hit and miss in the past but, according to this year’s public feedback and with its latest addition Artisan Market, I reckon this year’s is a must-see.
