All the juicy details we know about Outer Banks season five, according to the producers

Season four of Outer Banks dropped on Netflix earlier this month and everyone is still talking about it after THAT shock ending.

Sadly, the Pogues didn’t return to the Outer Banks with the legendary blue crown and rebuild their lives as everyone expected.

Instead, the beloved JJ was killed by his newly found father Groff and the Pogues watched him die in the saddest scene ever.

Now, everyone wants to know what’s happening with season five. Good news – it has been confirmed, but it’s going to be the last season.

Here’s everything you need to know, from the plot to the expected release date and whether Rudy Pankow could return.

This is what Outer Banks season five will be about

In an Instagram post, the producers revealed that Outer Banks season five will be about the Pogues finally ending their missions and returning home.

“With a little sadness, but also excitement, we’re putting season four behind us, and are turning to season five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago,” they said.

“Season five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet. We hope you’ll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break.”

“It sets the stage for an epic fifth and final season. We’re planning a story of redemption, and a season that embodies the friendship that JJ had come to represent,” producer John Pate also told Netflix’s Tudum.

So, when is it expected to be released?

In early November, it was revealed that writing for the final season is underway, so it’s still in the very early stages.

The scripts need to be finalised before filming can begin, and then the whole series has to be put together.

So, realistically, the earliest we can expect Outer Banks season five to arrive is in 2026.

There has typically been around a year and a half between seasons, so mid-2026 would make perfect sense.

However, the release date depends on how long the series takes to film and if there are any delays.

The producers hinted that JJ could return

The Pogues watched JJ die and buried his body, but the producers have left the possibility of his return open.

When asked if we’ll see Rudy Pankow in season five by Cosmopolitan, Pate said: “I’d never say never.”

They could always think up some crazy plot that means he didn’t die after all, but don’t get your hopes up.

“JJ’s death was a hard but necessary piece of the architecture for the story, and we plan on honoring that as much as we can because we love the character as much as the fans do,” the producer also said.

So, the character’s death certainly seems pretty final. We’ll have to wait and see what season five brings.
