Charli XCX on SNL is already getting dragged for being the least funny thing ever

We need to free our girl from the cruel shackles of American humour

SNL booking Charli XCX as host and musical guest was obviously inevitable after the insane year she’s had with Brat. Charli XCX in 2024 has gone from an artist who treads the boards between mainstream and underground cult classic to one who’s getting discussed on American political television after the ‘Kamala IS Brat’ tweet, and someone who caused even the most basic Love Island girlies to declare they were having a Brat summer. Charli XCX is hosting SNL this weekend, and whilst it normally is the least funny drivel on earth – the jarring Britishness of Charli having to do sketches of crap, late to the party Brat jokes has resulted in the appearance being dragged before it even airs. And it’s through no fault of her own, mind you – free her!

It is obviously a huge thing for Charli XCX and her career that she is on double SNL duty this weekend – hosting AND the musical guest. Not many people have the charisma or star power for both, but she does. And as a lifelong massive fan of Charli since True Romance days, nobody is happier for her getting this exposure than me.

But what I am less thrilled about and what takes the sheen off it spectacularly is when you remember that SNL is the least funny show on TV – and she is going to be chained to the harrowingly unfunny writing of the show. Prepare to be bombarded with an enslaught of truly hell on earth Brat jokes that might have vaguely raised a chuckle if you heard them in July, but by now it’s kind of like listening to your Dad make them around the Christmas dinner table.

You know when you laughed at a meme on Twitter and then two months later it made it to the Facebook mums? Well…

The jokes are already getting dragged online and we’ve barely even began. The episode will obviously air in the States tomorrow, so buckle up for a barrage of clips.

Even Charli’s heart doesn’t look like it’s in it. I suppose the issue here is a stark contrast between British and American humour, and the fact that Charli XCX is genuinely really funny and has great taste in internet memes and always has her finger on a witty pulse. You know full well she’s hating every second but doing it for the bag and the clout. Who can blame her? But she still deserved better. She deserves to be hilarious!

So get ready to not laugh, you guys…

And this is the biggest thing, right:

Charli XCX does everything with a sense of dryness, a blasé over-it, it girl persona that works so well for her and is part of her charm. But that whole attitude is deeply at odds with the chirpy nature of SNL. SNHell more like! Am I right!

Anyway, let’s just stream Brat and pretend this isn’t happening.
