A major character gets killed off in the new Bridget Jones film and I’m not okay with it
Absolutely heartbroken
The trailer for the new Bridget Jones film Mad About the Boy just came out and it’s already the worst one in my opinion. Why? They killed off Mr Darcy.
Well, the film is based on the books by Helen Fielding, so technically she killed off the iconic character, but it’s still not okay.
Mad About the Boy is the fourth installment in the series, following Bridget, once again played by Renée Zellweger, as she navigates life as a single mother in her 50s.
Due to be released on Valentine’s Day, I’m sure it will be a great film – but it just won’t be the same.
Yes, Mr Darcy really does die
The entire series is about Bridget and Mark’s epic love story as the childhood acquaintances meet at her parents’ New Year’s Eve party, eventually start dating, get married, and even have a baby together.
However, in the books, Mr Darcy is killed in a tragic accident while working as a human rights lawyer in Sudan, and the same story is being followed in the film.
Fielding’ decided to kill off the character as her own father died in a car crash, which made her realise life is full of “twists and turns,” she told the Daily Mail in 2023.
“It’s like the keys of a piano, isn’t it? There are white notes and black notes. And there’s a tragicomic element in my writing; the happy ending is just where you choose to end a book,” she said.
“Life, with all its twists and turns, carries on beyond it.”

The author also wanted to be able to write about Bridget as a single mum and knew Mr Darcy would never leave Bridget on his own accord, so he simply had to die.
That means no more Colin Firth
Sadly, that means Colin Firth doesn’t have a role in the new film at all.
However, he is set to appear in a new Peacock series called Lockerbie about the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, and Young Sherlock, a Prime Video series about Sherlock Holmes’ early life.
Plus, there is some good news. Hugh Grant is back!
The much-loved actor wasn’t in the third film Bridget Jones’ Baby as his character died in a plane crash, but a newspaper headline revealed he was found alive at the end of the movie.
In the trailer, it looks like Daniel Cleaver is like a dad to Bridget’s son William, and one cute scene sees him chatting to the little one while crossing the road.
You win some, you lose some.
