Here’s which love interest Bridget Jones ends up with in Mad About The Boy, according to the book

It’s not good news for Hugh Grant fans

Gang, the trailer for the new Bridget Jones film Mad About The Boy has dropped, and it’s going to take me three to five working days to recover. If you can’t wait until 14th February to find out which love interest Bridget Jones finally ends up with, I’ve got good news – the book has legit been out for 11 years. So, here’s a rundown of who all Bridget Jones’s many love interests are in Mad About The Boy, and which one turns out to be her forever person.

Mark Darcy

Er, yes, Mark Darcy dies. Sorry. If you didn’t already know this, then I’m sorry for crushing your dreams and happiness. But also, you’ve had since 2013 to read the book.

Our precious Mark Darcy died five years before the start of the book. During an assignment as part of his work as a human rights lawyer, he was driving with a United Nations representative through a wartorn area of Darfur. A landmine blows up the car.  His son with Bridget, Billy, was still a toddler and their daughter Mabel was a baby.

The author Helen Fielding explained that she wanted to represent her readers who had to navigate love as single mothers. She thought Mark Darcy was too nice to ever leave Bridget, so she had to kill him off to make the story happen.

The new trailer just confirmed that the film is heading in the same direction as the book. Bridget is mourning Mark Darcy in it. Although, her dad is also dead in the book, and he did pop up in the trailer?

Daniel Cleaver

I wouldn’t trust this man to toast bread, let alone watch my kids

Aka the sleazy Hugh Grant character. Fear not, because Daniel Cleaver is alive and kicking in the Mad About The Boy movie. The last film, Bridget Jones’ Baby, only temporarily killed the character off because Hugh Grant didn’t want to be in it. He’s absolutely fine in the Bridget Jones’ Baby book. Bridget is unsure of whether her baby’s father is Mark Darcy or him, instead of the Jack character in the film.

Daniel Cleaver pops up a lot in the book as Bridget’s children’s very irresponsible emergency baby sitter. Although he still flirts with (or at?) Bridget, she never seriously considers getting back together with him. A funny scene with him and Billy at the end of the trailer hints his role will be very similar in this film.

Roxster

I will be watching this film for the plot

No, that’s not a typo. That’s the genuine name of Bridget’s 29-year-old toyboy in Mad About The Boy. Roxster is being played by none other than Leo Woodall from One Day and The White Lotus, and the world is extremely excited about it. Leo Woodall is actually even younger than the character Roxster – the actor is only 28 now.

Bridget meets Roxster on X-formerly-known-as-Twitter in the book, although the trailer makes it look like they might find each other on Tinder instead? Bridget has loads of fun with Roxster. He helps her feel more confident in herself. And he looks hella fine when rescuing a dog from a swimming pool at a fancy party.

But Bridget eventually gets the ick after he says “I heart you… I wish I had a time machine”. They split up.

Mr Wallaker

Their love faces many tests, trials and trees

Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a PE teacher at Billy and Mabel’s school. He’s a funny background character for most of the book. He doesn’t let Billy onto the chess team, so naturally Bridget decides he’s the devil incarnate. He keeps popping up when Bridget is in the middle of, well, being Bridget, such as when she gets stuck up a tree in the park (as one does).

Scott Wallaker gets a younger girlfriend. Then Bridget suddenly decides she’s unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him. Then Mr Wallaker rescues Billy from a car accident. There’s loads of dramatic drama. But at the very end, Bridget does end up with him (yay!) Neither of them want to get remarried, so they host a Not-Wedding for all their friends which is super cute. And finally, our queen Bridget lives happily ever after. Until Helen Fielding decides to write another book, anyway.
