George RR Martin just dropped a huge clue about bringing a Game of Thrones character back

I need this show in my life

It’s time for Game of Thrones nerds to come out of hibernation. The author of the original books, George RR Martin, just dropped a massive clue about a future Game of Thrones spin-off. He hinted that a really beloved character might be a part of a future project. NOBODY is more excited than me (see what I did there?).

So, George RR Martin has a blog with the confusing name Not A Blog. The author uses it to tease upcoming books and shows. He just wrote a very lengthy post about a trip to London. This included an extremely detailed rundown of his thoughts on the London Eye, a West End show and a shop where Winston Churchill once bought a hat (?).

Anyways, if you scroll all the way to the bottom of the blog post, you’ll be rewarded.

By the way, the “we” seems to refer to George RR Martin’s UK editor and publishers.

The blog says, “We also got together with Maisie Williams for pizza and pasta, and talked about… well, no, better not get into that, do not want to jinx it.  But it could be so much fun.”

In case you somehow don’t know this, Maisie Williams is the actress who played Arya Stark in all seven seasons of Game of Thrones. (I say seven became I’m still in denial that the last one happened.)

Could George RR Martin be teasing that Arya Stark will appear in a future Game of Thrones project, or maybe even have her own spin-off? I certainly hope so.

George RR Martin is usually quite vague and mysterious about future Game of Thrones projects, and often doesn’t reveal much about them until they’ve aired and he starts bashing them. So, I don’t think he’d post something as blatant as this anecdote about Maisie Williams without thinking through the consequences. He wants us to speculate, people.

It does make a lot of sense for Arya Stark to appear in another show. The much-hated Game of Thrones finale left her story on a massive cliffhanger. She dumped her childhood crush Gendry, abandoned her few remaining family members (after spending seven years trying to find them?) then sailed off to vibey music to discover “what’s west of Westeros”. There are so many more stories which could be told about Arya.

Plus, if she goes off on an adventure somewhere new, HBO could make a show about her without involving (and having to pay) any other original cast members.

Arya is also one of the least divisive Game of Thrones characters. I’ve legit never met a fan who hates her. I can’t say that about any other character. So, I can totally see why HBO would think an Arya show is a fairly safe bet.

Many, many Game of Thrones spin-offs are rumoured to be in the works at HBO. Apparently people are at the brainstorming stages of shows about Aegon’s conquest of Westeros, and Corlys Velaryon. Writers did draft a script called Ten Thousand Ships about Princess Nymeria (who Arya named her pet wolf after). A Game of Thrones movie is reportedly on the cards.

However, a lot of these projects aren’t set in stone yet. The only shows which are definitely happening are two more seasons of House of the Dragon, and the tongue-twister that is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.

Could an Arya show be next? A girl certainly hopes so.
