Welsh student wins silver medal in Junior British and Irish Mountain Running Championships

Noa Vaughan was called a ‘standout performer’ after completing the race in 23 minutes and 35 seconds

A Welsh student has come second in the British and Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships.

18-year-old Noa Vaughan travelled to Wicklow to compete in the under-20s men’s category and came away with a silver medal.

The course in question consisted of a 900m ascent and was 3.8 miles long, which Noa completed in a mere 23 minutes and 35 seconds. He has also been named the “standout performer for the Wales team”, according to the North Wales Chronicle.

Noa, from Y Felinheli, competes for the Eryri Harriers running club in North Wales, and can often be seen proudly holding a Welsh flag after his races.

Speaking with the North Wales Chronicle, Noa said that he was “very happy to come home with a silver medal and help Wales to a team bronze medal”. Adding that he felt “proud of [his] performance and it was a good experience racing at a high level”, as he fell only six seconds short of the gold medal, which was taken by Samuel Bentham from England.

Future ambitions were also discussed where Noa expressed his goal to “represent Wales in the senior category and hopefully achieve a GB vest on the road, trails or cross country”.

Noa also said that he “would like to compete in the marathon, especially London”.

He further expressed that he hopes to receive a scholarship to study in America in pursuit of his dream to compete in the highest stages of running.

His tutor Gareth Griffiths said how “proud” they are as a college of “Noa’s achievements and that he’s been able to apply himself in both his coursework and his sporting achievements”.

Griffiths added that Noa has utilised his learning to his advantage to “improve his own sporting performance”.
