The Platform 2 ending explained: What really happened to Perempuán and the little boy?

The Platform 2 wins the award for the most depressing ending known to man

If you remember the absolute chaos that was The Platform, you won’t have been surprised at all the violence and gore of The Platform 2. Both films offer an outstanding social commentary, but they are seriously hard to understand at times. The Platform 2 had a similar ending to the first Platform movie, and if you stayed until the end credits, you may have been especially shocked to see some familiar faces. So, for anyone that couldn’t quite figure out what was going on (myself included), here’s the ending of The Platform 2 explained.

What was Perempuán’s plan at the end of the film?

Before we get into the juicy meanings of everything, we first need to solidify everything that happened at the end. Perempuán, who used to be an avid follower of the rules of the Pit, decides to escape after her cellmate Zamiatin sets himself on fire and her new cellmate is violently murdered by the Anointed One, Dagin Babi. Can’t blame her, this would probably be a breaking point for me too.

She decides that she’s going to escape following her dead cellmate’s plan. Her unnamed cellmate told her before she died that the prison managers use a variant of sevoflurane gas to knock all of the prisoners out once a month, but there’s an item hidden somewhere in the Pit that makes you appear dead. This means, you won’t get hit with the gas.

The item is a painting – Francisco Goya’s The Drowning Dog. By eating the painting, Perempuán goes unconscious, but only for a short time. She then wakes up during the changeover while the prison is suspended in anti-gravity and filled with guards. She’s tied into a huge mass of bodies being taken to the very bottom of the Pit (where Goreng ended up at the end of the first film).

However, it all changes when she sees a little boy, who’s been placed in the very bottom cell, 333. She decides to risk her own life to save him. The end!

How does The Platform 2 link to the original film?

It’s not just the setting that links these two films together – if you made it to the end credits, you will have heard some familiar voices in the Pit. The credits show a shot from the first film: Goreng and Trimagasi speaking to each other in the darkness below the last level. In the film’s final moments, Goreng turns around at the sound of Perempuán’s voice.

Did Perempuán know Goreng from outside the platform?

As the two hug at the very end of the film, Perempuán says “you, what are you doing here?” It’s clear they knew each other from before the platform. And, if you really wanted to reach, it could mean that Goreng was the partner she spoke about in her life story before she entered the pit.

Does Perempuán survive?

It’s pretty safe to assume that Perempuán did not survive after she gets to the bottom of the Pit. The fact that she meets Goreng at the end, who we all believed to be dead after the first film, implies that the darkness is a symbol for death, and the two are meeting in some sort of purgatory afterlife.

It’s not just Goreng who is waiting to greet her – every other dead character is there too. As she descends with the little boy, a woman in the darkness tells her “only they can go up. Your journey is over, but he will have another chance.” This basically confirms that she died.

Is the film a prequel or sequel to The Platform?

If you thought The Platform 2 would pick up from the first movie, you were wrong, and the ending explained why. The film is in fact a prequel, and we know that because of the end credits scene. The scene is a little continuation from Goreng’s story, which is the first movie. Perempuán is there to greet him, meaning her story has already taken place. Based on the chain of events, it would also make sense that there was some order before it all descended into chaos in the first movie. This was only made clear during the end credit scene, and made for a great plot twist.
