The Guardian’s new UK uni ranking is here – and these Russell Group unis are really far down

Babe, wake up, a new uni ranking just dropped

The Guardian’s UK uni ranking is out – and they’ve put some Russell Group unis way lower down than you might think.

The University of Birmingham and the University of Leeds are only in 36th and 37th place. Cardiff University has dropped right down from 29th in the 2024 rankings to 46th in The Guardian’s new list for 2025. Ouch. Nottingham and Newcastle Unis are 62nd and 63rd, and Queen Mary University of London is only 74 out of 122 unis.

The University of Oxford has reclaimed the top spot of the UK uni ranking after The Guardian put St Andrews above it last year. The University of Cambridge is still 3rd. Imperial College London is only 5th on the list, even though the Daily Mail put it 1st on their ranking this year.

The Guardian put the Uni of Bedfordshire at the bottom of its UK uni ranking for the 7th year in a row. That’s got to hurt.

The Guardian took many factors into account when they scored the different unis, including the percentage of grads in grad-level jobs or further study within 15 months, how much the uni spends on each student, and how satisfied the students are with the teaching.

Here is the most up-to-date UK uni ranking by The Guardian:
