Why are so many girlies getting ‘Augusted’ on TikTok and what does the trend actually mean?

Getting Augusted in August is ROUGH

Taylor Swift has just wrapped up her London leg of the Eras Tour but there’s no chance of the hype around her dying down anytime soon – including on TikTok.

Whether you’re a Swiftie or not, you’ll no doubt have come across the “Augusted” trend on TikTok, where people are sharing videos to Taylor Swift’s track, August. But if like me you have no idea what it’s about, here’s an explainer on the Augusted TikTok trend and what it actually means.

So apparently, not only is it bad to get Augusted, but getting Augusted IN August is just different gravy. The term Augusted comes from Taylor Swift’s song, August, which details the heartbreak of the character Augustine by her summer love, James.

Taylor’s 2020 Folklore album tells the intertwined stories of a love triangle between the song’s characters, James, Augustine and Betty. Whilst the other two songs, Betty and Cardigan, explore James and Betty’s relationship, August explores Augustine’s perspective as she recalls the bittersweet memories of her summer fling with James, who ultimately chooses to return to Betty, leaving Augustine crushed.

Swifties have since coined the term to encapsulate the feeling of a fleeting romance that ends in disappointment. So, getting Augusted basically means falling for someone who chooses to be with someone else.

But the concept has also grown to include the risks of giving love a second chance and all of the emotions that come with it. Some users have used the trend to share their emotions, including he hope and vulnerability of trying again in relationships, even when past experiences have tainted their outlook on life.

And with it being August, it seems like getting Augusted right now hits even harder. It’s almost like being the other woman but 100x worse.
