Raygun’s coach voiced concerns over the quality of her routine before disaster performance
Her coach ‘criticised’ her for being ‘too cautious’ before Olympics
It seems the writing was always on the wall when it came to the controversial breakdancing performance of Raygun. She’s become the standout athlete from the Paris Olympics, not necessarily for the right reasons but I will be recreating those kangaroo moves in the club.
A resurfaced interview that she did before her performance reveals that Raygun knew her coach and family had their doubts over the quality of her routine. Speaking to CNBC, she explained that her family weren’t exactly happy with her choice of breakdancing over more “feminine” dance styles.
She explained: “They were happy that I was dancing again since so much time and money was spent when I was younger, but they would have preferred for me to take on a more feminine dance style.”
The breakdancer also revealed that her coach had expressed concerns over the movements in her routine, and had “criticised” her for being “too cautious.” She said: “My coach has criticised me for being a little too cautious in breaking, but it has paid off. I’ve never been seriously injured in breaking – only twinges that were very easily fixed by physiotherapy. When I first started, I didn’t have the upper body strength, or the strength at all, required to break and that’s something I’m still building over the last 13 years.”
Following the backlash over her disastrous performance, Raygun has now broken her since on the amount of hate she’s been receiving. In a video posted to her Instagram, she admitted: “I wanted to start by thanking all the people who supported me. I really appreciate the positivity and was glad I was able to bring some joy into your lives. That’s what I hoped.”
She continued: “I didn’t realise that would also open the door to so much hate which has frankly been pretty devastating. I went out there and I had fun. I did take it very seriously. I worked my butt off working for the Olympics. I gave my all, truly.
“I’m honoured to have been a part of the Australian Olympic team and Breaking Olympic debut. What the other athletes have achieved has been phenomenal.” She pleaded to the media to “stop harassing my family, my friends, the Australian breaking community and the broader street dance community. Please respect their privacy.”
