So, why was Otto Hightower in a cell and what happens to him in House of the Dragon books?

During the season finale of House of the Dragon, we saw a tiny snippet of Otto Hightower seemingly being held in a cell, in a very out of context short scene. When we last saw Otto Hightower he was on his way to Oldtown with plans of reuniting with his grandson Daeron Targaryen.

But, from the small snippet of him we saw in the finale it seems like he never made it to Oldtown after all. So, where exactly is Otto being held and what ends up happening to him in the books? Let’s find out!

During the season finale of House of the Dragon, we see Otto Hightower being held behind bars in a cell, with no explanation as to why he’s there or who captured him.

During an Inside the Episode behind the scenes video, showrunner Ryan Condal revealed a tiny bit of information, explaining: “We find Otto in this cell somewhere, and we don’t know quite where he is or what happened to him. We were delighted to have Rhys reenter the story, and I will just say that the Otto Hightower tale has not yet come to an end.

Geeta Vasant Patel, who directed the House of the Dragon finale was also asked about Otto Hightower in her interview with Variety. She added: “I was asked to shoot that scene. I want to know where he is, too. I don’t know! Those guys talk about a lot of things in the writers’ room, and then they don’t tell us. They don’t tell any of us! They don’t tell the actors, either. I don’t think it’s fair.”

In the books, it is actually Otto who meets with the Triarchy instead of Tyland Lannister. They eventually accepted his alliance and sent 90 warships to the Gullet. However, after Rhaenyra and the Blacks manage to take back King’s Landing, they decide to behead Otto first, something he predicted early on in the books.
