Inside Rebels: City of Indra, the forgotten sci-fi novel Kendall and Kylie wrote in 2014

It’s got 3/5 on Goodreads!

Whether you seek it out or not, most people who live amongst us who even so much is dip their baby toe into the waters of pop culture will have ended up knowing a fair bit about the Kardashian – Jenner brood. Such is their impact and main talent: Never fading from public eye. But even the keenest of Kardashian stans forget things, like the fact that Kendall and Kylie Jenner released a dystopian science fiction novel called Rebels: City of Endra in 2014. No, I’m not joking.

Come again?

In 2014, Kendall and Kylie Jenner released a sci-fi novel. Quite a rogue move from two girls best known for being the half sisters of Kardashians, modelling and making a lip kit. But sure enough, here we have Rebels: City of Indra, a book written by the two and ‘ghostwritten’ by Maya Sloan.

The plot of Rebels: City of Indra is a “thrilling dystopian story about two super-powered girls who embark on a journey together.” It’s the story of Lex and Livia, who certainly are NOT called Alex and Olivia. On the two lead characters, Kylie Jenner said “The fans seem to love it. That’s why we did it, [the characters]’ names are Lex and Livia. I think we wanted to make Lex more like me and Livia more like Kendall, and they kind of evolved into their own characters.” Ingenious.

The City of Indra where Kylie and Kendall – sorry, Lex and Livia – romp about in floats in the clouds and has a rich side and a poor side, and the two are kindred orphan spirits who both have a shining green symbol in their eyes. Lex is a scrabbling tough talking orphan and Livia is a debutant. She was an orphan, she was a debutante – can I make it anymore obvious?

Erm, did it sell?

In short: No. According to Style Caster who wrote about the book at the time, the Jenner sisters shifted 13,000 copies – which considering the social media following they had is absolutely woeful.

Somehow though, Rebels: City of Indra got a sequel! Time of the Twins was released in 2016 and continued the much anticipated adventures of Lex and Livia. Again, not a soul read it.
