UCU announces an additional strike day

Strike action will now take place on the 15th March

The UCU has announced an additional strike day which is set to take place on Wednesday the 15th March, across Universities in the UK.

This takes the total number of strike days in March up to six.

Further strike action will take place on 16th March, 17th March, 20th March, 21st March, and 22nd March.

General secretary of the UCU, Jo Grady, said: “I’m pleased to say that whilst Acas talks take place on a confidential basis, we are making progress across a range of subjects and will bring you more information as those talks come to a natural conclusion.”

Explaining the reason for the extra strike day, Grady explained, “The reason we’ve added this additional date is to focus the employers minds as talks come to a conclusion this week and especially early next week”, following on to say, “They need to have them on the maximum amount of pressure”.

The strikes are a part of the UCU’s ongoing dispute with University employers over pay, working conditions and pensions, with action affecting 15o universities around the UK, including Lancaster University.

The additional strike date comes after an initial two-week pause in strike action, after progress was made in negotiations.
