King’s Joins Slavery Inquiry
It comes after calls for individual colleges to play their part
The King's Provost, Michael Proctor, announced on Twitter today that the college "welcomed" the University's inquiry into CU's historical links to slavery, and in addition would "facilitate research by our students into the College's past connections, financial and intellectual, with slave trading, slavery and abolition; and on contemporary slavery."
The Legacy of Slavery Inquiry, (read about them here), will report its findings in 2021. It has been criticised for taking the "easier" option of referring to the University rather than the colleges, with academics like Priyamvada Gopal stating that this will not be a comprehensive enough inquiry.
One interesting question is going to be whether the study covers just the 'university' or the colleges as well. Historically, and to this day in matters relating to say, racism, Cambridge has played the game of separating 'university' from 'colleges' when it's handy.

This move by King's is by no doubt a welcome one; it remains to be seen whether it will be repeated by more colleges University-wide.
