Belfast reclaimed the night

This weekend we went along to Belfast’s own Reclaim The Night rally, and spoke to some of the marchers about why they decided to join in.

This is what they had to say.

“Every woman in Belfast has had that feeling, holding their keys in their hand and looking over their shoulder, and I think that’s something a lot of men have the privilege of not feeling, and so we need to raise awareness because everyone should feel safe, not just cis white men.”

“I am here for anyone who has experienced sexual harassment, to send the message that it is wrong and show my support to those people.”

“I think every girl has felt that horrible fear whenever you’re walking somewhere by yourself, it’s dark and you’ve done nothing wrong, you’re in your own street, and you’re still terrified, and that is something that no one should have to live with.”

“Wherever I go, whatever I wear, I want to feel safe, that’s all.”

“As a survivor myself, who was raped because I was Trans I feel tonight is very important for me as an individual and for the community as a whole. For far too long society has put in place these prejudices for trans people and women, and it’s important that we stand up to all the violence because it shouldn’t be allowed to happen.”

“We shouldn’t have to feel scared walking around at night, I hate having to text my friends so they know I’m safe and I am sick of feeling intimidated and threatened. Also in bars, when guys seem to think they can touch you inappropriately, it’s not okay and it has to stop.”

“You shouldn’t have to worry about what time you go out and what time you get home, those restrictions are for children.”
