SU elections: the political circus is in town

Out with the old and in with the new for the SU’s officers and some of the campaigns have some rather unorthodox methods.

It’s gimmicks galore outside the University of Sheffield’s Students Union with 45 candidates competing for one of 8 student officer roles. Normal ways of getting supporters have gone out the window, with cheesy slogans and viral videos everywhere you look, has the union finally gone mad?

Find a different route, these people are worse than club promoters.

Some candidates have been gifted with names which are asking to be turned into puns and slogans. Jack Wyse being the Wyse choice? Yael Shafritz’s ‘Yell for Yael’? Or maybe ‘Your way with José’ from Jose Diaz de Aguliar? But some just don’t work – Amyoncé for Activities with her Beyoncé cut out?

XO? Or just a big NO?

xo? Or just a massive no?

Unfortunately, some parents never prepared their children with names which make a punchy tagline. So they must go for viral videos to impress voters. Some of this year’s funniest include; ‘Let Clio take the wheel’ with a candidate rolling down the hills of Crookes in the newest most fashionable model of the Little Tikes classic.

Is this a wheely good laugh?

Other elections videos have included The Adams Family theme tune, which might not get the message across but its brilliant if you’re falling asleep in a seminar and hear the theme tune blasting in through the window. Check it out.

All this ‘clever’ campaigning is all to get your vote for the next year’s Student Officer roles. Its obvious now that these roles will come with a price, embarrassing yourself online more than just the standard rough picture after a night out. Will the candidates be haunted for the rest of their lives?

There is certainly a fine line between making a difference and making a fool out of yourself.

Finally a warning for next year’s freshers, if you live in Endcliffe, Ranmoor or Opal 2. The candidates will take their missions mobile. How would you answer the door to Amyoncé? Does your flat have parking for Clio?
