IMDB newest addition to its rating system is all about women.

According to IMDB, The F Rating exists to draw attention to the lack of women working in the movie business. F Ratings are awarded to movies either written by women, directed by women, or featuring significant female characters — and in the best cases, all three, meaning they’ll be awarded The Triple F.

With support for women working staring in film becoming a major top of discussion, it’s important to remember we still have a long way to go, and this is a wonderful step in the right direction.

The rating has so far been adopted by 40 UK cinemas and festivals, and it is quickly gaining steam. The online database IMDb has now tagged 21,800 films with the F-rating.

While it’s wonderful to see this, it’s important to remember why we needed it int he first place. The divide between women in film is large, and not just in terms of women on screen, but all the way to the conception of the film in the first place. And that’s not even mentioning the difference in the money divide.

So here’s to The F Rating, out new favorite judge of film. Think Frozen and American Honey.
