We asked York students about their weirdest club essentials, and you delivered
From the bare necessities to the oddly genius!
Announcing your new favourite bouncers – The York Tab. We’ve taken on the role of door-staff (not literally) to take a look inside your pockets and bags on a night out… you have some explaining to do! We asked and you gave us your clubbing essentials, something you must have for a night on the town. You truly delivered like a take-away at 3am!
While we may not all be the biggest clubber in the world, we asked for your clubbing essentials and here are the suggestions we got.
Plastic bag
While it may seem like a bit of a rogue choice, a plastic bag is a fairly good idea, especially if you or one of your mates is prone to a late night chunder. Save yourself that £80 Uber cleaning fee and just carry a plastic bag around instead!
Earplugs
Definitely a must! Sometimes the music is just a tad too loud and while banging music may appeal to some people, others don’t fancy losing their hearing for Sophie Ellis Bextor playing at full volume in 2024.
I know a few people who take these to clubs and while I may have to shout a bit louder to get their attention, it’s worth it for their comfort.
Period products
100 per cent. Even if you’re not on your period, it’s always a good idea. Firstly, because you don’t want to get caught out. Secondly, no one will love you more than someone who gets their period but doesn’t have a tampon in the club. The bond that comes out of that experience will last a lifetime (until closing time).

Hand sanitiser and baby wipes
I grouped these two together because they have similar purposes. Nothing is grosser than touching a sticky table at a bar or club, so a way to clean your hands is a necessity.
Furthermore, if you end up going home with someone, you’ll probably want a way to wash the makeup or club grime off your face ready for the day after. Plus, you’ll be able to fix any makeup that isn’t looking too great after an hour of dancing.
Tissues
Too many times has there been the awkward hand over of toilet paper under the toilet stall door. Tissues will solve that problem immediately. You’re welcome.
Organ Donor Card
Definitely not a suggestion I was expecting to get, if I’m being honest. I suppose it’s useful, but let’s hope they don’t need your liver!
Scrunchie
Also a great, but normal, suggestion. Clubs can always overheat and get too warm, so a scrunchie or a hair bobble is probably the most important essential.
Brioche and Babybels
I was expecting food, but I’ll take these very specific snack choices. Maybe an early-morning kebab isn’t your thing, so taking your own food to a club may not be a bad idea.
The bouncers may take it off you though; one time my friend tried to take a Nature Valley breakfast bar into a club but it got taken off her by the time we’d left – and someone had eaten half of it! Bit random, but okay.
Makeup
A very normal thing to bring to a club. Need I say more?
Heart sunglasses
Sunglasses are always a great option, not just because you look unbelievably cool in them, but they’re also a great bonding tool. If you go out clubbing by yourself (if that’s something you like and are comfortable doing), or you want to make friends out, sunglasses are a good way to make friends because people will probably ask to try them on or wear them for a bit, so it acts as a good icebreaker. Just make sure you get them back!
A book
For your little Y/N main character moment. Okay, this one wasn’t sent in by one of you, but suggested by a friend of mine. If you truly want to live out your 2013 Wattpad Y/N moment, then bring a book to a club and try to look as uninterested as possible with the crowd. God knows you got dragged there by your friends! Bonus points if it’s a book about a very niche topic.
