Here’s your ultimate Notts fresher’s bucket list for settling into uni life

All you need to be a true Notts student

It’s a new academic year, and with that comes a new batch of freshers. By now you’ve probably been here a couple of weeks and might just be starting to settle in. Either that, or you may be thinking ‘What the hell have I got myself into?’

Starting university is a crazy experience. For most of you, it will be your first time living away from home in a new city with people you’ve never met. You’re almost guaranteed to meet so many different types of people and make core memories that last a lifetime, but it’s ok and perfectly valid if you’re not feeling ‘it’ just yet.

Whether you feel settled, homesick, or a little bit of both this bucket list will ensure you don’t miss out on a thing and that you get the full Notts experience.

Uni club nights

You may have already fallen victim to an Ocean Friday or CRISIS. If not, there’s no time like the present. If screaming Taylor Swift or dressing up in crazy costumes isn’t your vibe you can always try Unit 13 or Stealth. Whatever music you’re into, Nottingham nightlife has something for everyone. Even if you don’t think it will be your thing, give it a go at least once as you might surprise yourself.

Drain your SFE on Uber Eats

Unfortunately, this is a universal experience. If you happen to be in catered accommodation, my thoughts are with you. I can guarantee you’ll definitely fall victim to this. Maybe you’re self-catered instead, and think of yourself as a chef. Just wait until you’re back from your night out, the meal prep isn’t cutting it, and you just want some proper post-club scran. Whilst you’re still getting to grips with your surroundings, it is so much easier to order than to trek around the city centre being both indecisive and hangry. My best advice? Order with your friends to split delivery, you’ll probably convince yourself you’re actually getting a great deal.

Go to Winter Wonderland

Another must do in Nottingham is to visit the Winter Wonderland in December. With several food stands, a ferris wheel, and an ice rink, there’s something for everyone. It’s the perfect place to find last minute Christmas presents for your family members back home. If you’re feeling particularly boujie, there is also an ice bar that may peak your interest.
Even if you just go to observe, it is truly beautiful. No promises you won’t fall in love with the city and decide you don’t want to go home anymore.

Forget your ID

This is rite of passage as a uni student. At some point in your university experience, you will leave your ID behind and be forced to abandon your trip to Sheaves. Either that, or you make the fatal mistake on a night out. Ocean also requires your student ID, which a bit too much to remember when you’re several vodka cranberries deep. It happens to the best of us, so try not to feel bad for dragging your flatmate home with you as there are always plenty more nights out to experience.

Attend a Rock City gig

I could be considered a die hard Rock City fan, but for good reason – there’s nothing it doesn’t do! It’s likely that Rock City will become your go to for seeing some of your favourite artists. Some upcoming gigs include Blossoms, The Snuts and Circa Waves. If none of these are calling your name it’s worth checking the Rock City website for a full list of upcoming gigs. Even better if your gig falls on a club night, you’ll already be in the right place and the right mood for a memorable night.
