Everything you need to know about what your favourite LUU spot says about you
Everyone secretly loves a Fruity
Leeds University Union is absolutely full of iconic spots. Everyone’s got their go-to, but have you ever wondered what yours says about you?
If so, you’re in luck, because I’ve covered everywhere from Balcony to Old Bar.
Common Ground
We’ll start with the obvious. You head there, full of high hopes and a group of friends, get your laptop out and only write a grand total of 10 words in three hours.
But hey, at least you sat on campus with your work, it’s an impressive feat in the university day!
Balcony
You want the social vibes of Common Ground but like to think you take your work more seriously. You don’t want to commit to a library, but sitting in Balcony helps you feel a bit more academic than if you headed for the Common Ground sofas.
Union Foyer
I’ve never met anyone who actually goes there intentionally. You probably stumbled into LUU in search of somewhere to wait for a friend, and either stayed there for 30 mins staring into space, or opened your laptop but ended up scrolling through TikTok instead. It’s a fleeting stop in your day, and you’ve probably forgotten that you ever even sat there.
Terrace
You enjoy the finer things in life, like two for £14 cocktails, and you convince yourself that that’s a good deal, even though Headrow and Belgrave do two for £12. Or you’re a rugby boy doing a post-Mischief rollover. Terrace on a Thursday is a truly polarised hotspot.
Old Bar
Most Read
You’re sociable, down to earth, and it goes without saying that you love a pint. You’re probably a second or third year, and have come in for a pint and curly fries mid essay crisis.
You’re content with the basics, and feel no pull towards the aesthetic reconstruction of Terrace; as long as you’ve got a drink in hand then you’re happy.
Upstairs Meeting Rooms
You probably play piano or are in Yoga Society, as those are about the only two groups of people I’ve ever seen up there.
Upstairs is a bit of a mystery – what do people actually do when they spend their time there?
Refectory
You live in Charles Morris, or you lived in Charles Morris and can’t quite break your first year habits. You like convenience, cooking is a mystery to you, and the thought of living off-campus in second and third year gives you shivers. Food shops, meal prep, and actually having to walk to uni will hit you like a tonne of bricks.
Dance Studios
It goes without saying, but you’re probably a dancer, and more likely a dance committee member doing last-minute choreography for that night’s rehearsal. Or you’re that boy who kicks a football around the studios – shoutout to you, we’re all desperate to know what you’re doing in there.
First Floor
A CRIMINALLY underrated spot on campus. It’s quiet, chilled, and there’s almost always a free table to work at. The chairs are comfy but not too comfy, so the chance of getting totally distracted is quite low.
A truly elite spot to work in.
Stylus
You are quite cool and probably love a mosh pit. You definitely own those Buffalo womper stomper shoes and regularly wear fishnet tights. Is there some sort of unspoken dress code for events here?
Fruity
You are either a fresher or someone who is well and truly up for anything. Put it this way: I’ve never met a Fruity lover who is boring. We all pretend we hate it, but it is still packed every week – the Hyde Park girlies secretly LOVE a bit of Katy Perry on a Friday night.
