Your guide to the best sober spots in Leeds

Time to put the vodka cranberry down

With the sober-curious movement gaining popularity, interest in alcohol-free activities is on the rise and, fortunately, there are many sober-friendly activities in and around Leeds.

For some, the nightlife is a highlight in Leeds, and understandably too – Leeds nights out are undeniably iconic. But, sometimes it’s also refreshing to reconnect with nature. Whether you’re a new student in Leeds, or need a break from dreaded assignments, these activities are a great way to spend a day in the heart of Yorkshire.

Roundhay Park

In the northeast of Leeds, Roundhay has everything you would want in a park. With lakes, a mansion, gardens and a castle, there is definitely enough to do for a whole day. Close to the car park is Tropical World, where you can find various animals and exotic plants in the glasshouses.

Roundhay Park also hosts events all year round, such as food festivals and themed walks.

Royal Armouries

The Royal Armouries is one of my favourite museums in the UK and was recommended to me by my history teacher, and now I’m recommending it to you.

Along the River Aire, the museum is filled with military history and is home to the national collection of weapons and armour. The exhibits on each floor have a vast display of war, tournaments, and African and Asian history.

One of the most memorable parts of the armouries, are the shows throughout the day, where you can see sword fighting, and listen to detailed accounts of warfare.

Chance & Counters

Found on Merrion Street in the city centre, Chance & Counters opened last year and is a fun place to spend a day with your mates.

It has over 500 board games with food and drinks, and if you’re stuck on what to play, the staff are really helpful and can make suggestions.

Spoiler alert: They don’t have Twister.

The Grand Theatre

The Grand Theatre is an excellent way to spend an evening. You can watch musicals, comedies, operas and shows from Oliver to Shrek The Musical.

Although not many students visit the theatre, it is always a good idea to support the arts, especially when you can get an ice cream during the intermission.

Leeds City Museum

On Millennium Square, the city museum has a large exhibition of natural history along with some impressive collections.

Upstairs, you can find the Ancient World Gallery with archaeological discoveries from Leeds and around the world. They also feature different collections as the last time I went, the third floor was host to the Pianodrome, an amphitheatre created of upcycled pianos, as part of the Leeds International Piano Competition.

So, whether you’ve maxed out on Mischief or just not a big drinker, don’t worry. Despite Leeds’ crazy nightlife reputation, there’s always a fun and sober alternative.
