Plain clothed officers to patrol Exeter bars following string of sex attacks in the city
There have been three assaults within two weeks
Devon and Cornwall Police will be patrolling Exeter’s bars and clubs in plain clothes in order to better protect women on nights out in the city.
This comes as there have been three reports of sexual assault or rape in Exeter’s city centre over the last two weeks.
An increased police presence has been noticed in the area with authorities patrolling the streets and taping off crime scenes.
Whilst the force emphasises that the incidents are unconnected, a police spokesperson has ensured residents that officers are responding to fears about women’s safety.
Devon and Cornwall Police are also carrying out an initiative dubbed Project Nighteye, intending to call out predatory behaviour before a crime takes place. One tactic involves specially trained officers patrolling outside bars and clubs at different times and locations.
Chief Inspector Dawn Perriam claims that they are doing all that they can, such as placing plain clothed and uniformed patrols in areas people have felt unsafe. She adds that officers also intend to provide “a reassuring, visible, and approachable presence” in Exeter.
The Chief Inspector continued by saying she wants to reassure the public that the police is “doing everything [it] can to make sure Exeter is a safe place […] Women and girls should be able to go out without fear or threat of harm.”
Devon Live reports that the initial incident involved an alleged sexual attack occurring behind The Chevalier Inn pub on Fore Street at 3am on Sunday, 15th September.
On 17th September, Ahmed Saed, 23, appeared at Exeter Magistrates Court, where he was charged with sexual assault. Authorities have indicated that he will remain in custody until his appearance at Exeter Crown Court on 18th October.
