The Birmingham Tab is accepting applications for the new 2024/2025 editorial team!
The positions available are News Editor, Features Editor, Social Media Editor, and TikTok Editor.
This is an incredible opportunity to make a real contribution to a student media company that is read by thousands of students every month.
All current students are welcome to apply and journalism experience is not a requirement as you’ll receive training from experienced editors and journalists from The Tab HQ.
The only requirements are that you must be a current university student in Birmingham, and you must be available to attend and help run weekly meetings.
Being an editor for The Birmingham Tab is fantastic for your CV. It opens up loads of opportunities for you and also lets you meet new people so it’ll not only boost your resume but your social circle too.
You’ll also get opportunities to write for the national site, The Tab, which is read by more than nine million readers each month.
Editors are also invited to London twice yearly to meet the national writers, have training, and occasionally get a free curry. What more could you want?
News Editor
It’s important to stay informed and knowledgeable about all the latest news in Birmingham by keeping your ear to the ground.
The fast-paced nature of news requires careful selection in your work. When a story emerges, you need to be able to work swiftly and efficiently to get it published.
The News Editor is in charge of creating news articles for The Birmingham Tab, writing on a weekly basis, and assisting the Editor in Chief by editing articles.
You’ll also commission stories to writers, and occasionally help with features, if required.

Features Editor
As The Birmingham Tab’s Features Editor, you’ll be in charge of writing and editing our amazing feature articles.
You need a clear vision for how you want our features section to appear and to develop a plan for its direction, as well as lots of ideas for fun and interesting articles.
This role gives you a platform to showcase the wit, knowledge, and creativity in your writing, and having a clear understanding of what’s engaging to Birmingham’s student population is vital.
As well as coming up with article ideas for our weekly meetings, you’ll also need to assist writers in developing their own pitches, and also edit pieces along with the the Editor in Chief.

Social Media Editor
This is a dream role for anyone who wants to get into the world of social media or content creation.
You will be responsible for The Birmingham Tab’s digital brand and for expanding student reach, meaning you’ll be heading our social media platforms across Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter as well as working with the TikTok Editor to brainstorm creative content.
We want someone who can make memes that are relevant to Birmingham students, someone who loves social media, and someone who wants to grow a brand.
You’ll be tasked with advertising new articles, posting daily content on our stories, sharing memes, growing our audience, and keeping up follower engagement.
As Social Media Editor, you will also support the editorial team by keeping an eye out for Birmingham-related content and by keeping your ear to the ground for the latest news and campus gossip. You won’t be required to edit articles, but you’re welcome to write articles, if you wish.

TikTok Editor
You’ll be working with the Social Media Editor and the other section editors to promote The Birmingham Tab’s content on TikTok.
TikTok is the social media platform we most want to see grow at The Birmingham Tab so we’re looking for someone who has a solid grasp of meme culture, and wants to make lots of fun and creative videos.
You should love being in front of the camera, as you will be expected to present some of the news articles we publish.
Don’t worry if you’re not used to writing scripts for TikTok videos or even presenting on screen, as our Assistant Editor from HQ is a broadcast journalist by trade, so she’ll be able to help you as and when you need.
